Dear Students in Ecology, Management and Restoration of Rangelands,

Happy New Year and Welcome Back to Campus!

I hope you had a fun and fulfilling winter break!

At last count, there are 13 undergraduate students and 6 graduate students in the degree option called Ecology, Management and Restoration of Rangelands. We are thrilled to have you aboard and we look forward to working with you and helping you achieve your academic and professional goals.

First, I provide an update on Range Courses (RAM) this semester.  Next, I present four suggestions and a course update to help you navigate the system at the University of Arizona.


RAM Courses this Semester
RAM 382 Rangeland Plant Communities of the West. I teach the lecture TTH 11-150 and lab TH 330-600.
RAM 340 Conservation and Agriculture in the Southwest. Aaron Lien teaches the lectures from 200-315 on TTH and there are several Saturday field trips planned.
RAM 446/556 Management and Restoration of Wildland Vegetation. Jeff Fehmi teaches the lectures MWF 10-1050, and the lab 12-6 on Friday.



Suggestions for Successfully Navigating the UA

1. Senior Degree Check
If you plan to graduate this semester (May 2018), then you must complete a Senior Degree Check, and you should start by filing for a degree check in your UAccess Student Center under Next Steps. The procedure is a bit different than previous years, and it will include a required completion of a graduation survey. Katie Hughes will be contacting you about that survey in the near future. In addition, she will provide more details about the entire process. Do not delay the start of this process!

2. Meet with your Advisor in the EMRR Program
Regular meetings with your advisor will help you complete your academic program more efficiently and give you insights into employment and career development opportunities.  Contact me or Katie Hughes (khughes at email.arizona.edu<https://mail.catnet.arizona.edu/owa/redir.aspx?C=NdYieKwHvkSDGVHhN540jLwweu8Eg9AINeyktG8KubtmYHwmtLqBlCeVAB0FVHfBRfuy5tzrg0s.&URL=mailto%3akhughes%40email.arizona.edu>) if you do not know who serves as your advisor.

3. Tierra Seca Student Club
This group provides a social network for EMRR Students to learn more about how to navigate the academic program and extracurricular activities to enrich your experience and build your resume.  Don't hesitate to engage with them for fun and assistance.  The meeting schedule for this semester is Wednesday at 5 pm for the following days and locations: 17 January in ENR2 S120A; 07 February in ENR2 N572; 21 February in ENR2 S120A; 14 March in ENR2 S120A; 28 March in ENR2 S120A; 11 April in ENR2 S120A; and 25 April in ENR2 S120A.

 4. “Range” Email List serve
We have an email list serve (srm at list.cals.arizona.edu<mailto:srm at list.cals.arizona.edu>) that is used to communicate about meetings, jobs, trips, and other topics.  Please send me your email address if you are not already on the list serve, but want to join.
