Greetings!

I will be recruiting on behalf of the Census Bureau's Geography Division at the U of A's Spring Career Days tomorrow (Wednesday, March 9), 11am-4pm, in the Student Union's 3rd Floor Ballroom.

If you know of any Geographers or GIS Analysts who might be interested in a great job in Washington, DC, please send them to me. They will need to have a Master's Degree (2 years) OR a Bachelor's Degree and at least one year of work experience (including internship experience) by the end of this semester to potentially qualify.

Also, consider referring potential applicants to attend these two presentations, on Thursday, by my boss, Michael Ratcliffe:

"A meeting has been set up for those interested in discussing job opportunities, internships, and careers at the U.S. Census Bureau with Michael Ratcliffe, Assistant Division Chief for Geographic Standards, Criteria, Research, and Quality.
Thursday, March 10
2:00-2:45 PM
ENR2 Building, Room S482

[RSVP to David Plane: plane at email.arizona.edu<mailto:plane at email.arizona.edu>]

Later that afternoon, @ 3:30 in ENR S107, Mr. Ratcliffe will be our SGD Colloquium speaker; his talk is titled:
The Air a Mix of Diesel and Spices: Geopoetics of the US 1 Corridor, Howard County, Maryland."

It would be great to see all of you while I'm on campus on Wednesday and Thursday!

Regards,

Tiernan

The Census Bureau is hiring for Geography/GIS positions in Washington. I started working for the Census Bureau seven years ago after applying to a USA Jobs posting like the one below. Please forward this email to anyone who might be interested.

See the attachment for a clearer description of the variety of work we do. When I started I was updating tract and block group boundaries from local government proposals for the 2010 Census and TIGER Line shapefiles. Currently, I write and manage software requirements for a new remote sensing application.

All of the positions will be in Washington, DC, with a few possible exceptions at the Census Bureau's six Regional Offices.

When applying, remember that any application that does not say that it meets every single one of the listed minimum qualifications will not be considered. Reach deep and prepare to advocate for yourself like I did.

Best,

Tiernan

Greetings!

The Census Bureau plans to hire 40 geographers at this time. The link below to USAJobs.gov provides the necessary information for prospective applicants. The positions are listed as two-year term positions that can (and will likely) be extended to 4 years for those whose performance is acceptable. I encourage you to encourage your students to apply. The positions range from GS-9 to GS-12. Normally a GS-9 position requires post-graduate credits or a degree, but those with a Bachelor's degree can qualify with experience. I strongly suggest that the applicants give themselves credit in their resumes and responses to the questions for any evidence of work they have accomplished, including internships, course exercises, fieldwork, volunteer work etc. Initial evaluations will be done by professionals who are not familiar with the discipline, so choice of words is important in responses.

While this announcement will remain open for several months, we will begin processing applications in early March. This is a great opportunity for graduates to gain experience in a world-class organization that has a diverse range of opportunities in the field of geography - from "making" geography by delineating new geographies, to multiple uses of GIS skills, to determining standards and criteria for geospatial data quality, and managing other staff that support geographic operations. The attached document outlines more details on what geographers do at the Census Bureau.

We look forward to receiving applications from your students!
