Reserve Assistant Director
UC Berkeley Blue Oak Ranch Reserve

The Natural Reserve System (NRS) at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), invites applications for the position of Reserve Assistant Director at the Blue Oak Ranch Reserve (BORR) located near San Jose, California on Mount Hamilton. Founded in 2007, BORR is a 3,280 acre ecological reserve and full-service biological field station that is one of the four Berkeley NRS sites operated within the UCB Office of Research, and in collaboration with the University of California Natural Reserve System in Oakland. The facilities at the site include 17 buildings, staff residences, overnight housing for up to 50, shared facilities for meetings, classes, group kitchen, field lab, off-grid power and water systems, wireless environmental sensing stations, state-of-the-art computer facilities and internet systems, vehicles, and equipment. Reserve users include over 700 research and University class users per year including up to 60 or more at one time. The responsibilities of the position are year-round, weather-independent, and full time.

The NRS mission is to support research, education and public service, and contribute to the understanding and wise stewardship of the Earth. The Assistant Director collaborates in leadership of the Reserve to provide support for researchers, university classes and outreach programs. The Assistant Director is responsible for co-directing all aspects of the daily operations and planning; scheduling of instructional and research activities, assisting with research project approvals, budget planning and oversight, purchasing, annual reporting, informatics and digital media (website and social media), personnel and health and safety; the operation and maintenance of facilities and equipment including supervision of the Reserve Senior Building Maintenance Worker and volunteers; managing IT systems, and management of the Reserve’s natural resources. The Assistant Director will assume full responsibilities in the Director’s absence. The Assistant Director may conduct independent scientific research up to 15% time.

The successful candidate will be self-sufficient and have: an advanced degree in environmental science or a related field and experience with field research, excellent problem solving skills, experience in project management, outstanding communication skills and the ability to engage productively with diverse user groups and stakeholders, excellent organizational skills, a willingness to assume responsibility readily, and the ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.

Demonstrated experience in the following areas is required: administration and budget management, staff supervision, facilities and equipment operations and maintenance, land stewardship and resource monitoring. Preferred qualifications: experience with operations at a remote field station, advanced degree in an environmental science or similar, track record of leading successful grant proposals, and skills in information technology and wireless networking.

The Assistant Director is required to reside at the Reserve when on duty, except for brief intervals on BORR business, or on authorized days off and vacation periods. Housing is provided. This includes being on call outside of normal business hours. Travel is required to UCB and University offices in Oakland several times per year. Employee must be physically fit to perform emergency road maintenance and facilities maintenance when Building Maintenance Worker is unavailable.

Compensation commensurate with experience up to a maximum of $80,000/yr. Start Date: September 1, 2016 or until filled. Initial employment will be under a 1-year contract, subject to renewal upon performance and availability of funds. A comprehensive benefits package is included.
