US Geological Survey Sonoran Desert Research Station (SDRS)
Purpose of the position
The person in this position will work with a US Geological Survey ecologist on landscape-scale studies of topics such as changes in vegetation assemblages under climate change and outcomes of sampling designs for invasive plant detection, among others. Project work will mainly consist of developing, analyzing, and documenting GIS based spatial datasets; entering, editing, and quality checking data in Excel and/or Access data systems; developing metadata for spatial and tabular datasets; helping with report, proposal, and publication writing. Work may include occasional field assistance.
The position will begin in August 2015 (dates flexible), 15-20 hours/week and will extend through the school year and potentially beyond.
Desired qualifications
Minimum of a bachelor's degree in ecology, wildlife biology, geography or landscape architecture. Demonstrated experience with a range of ESRI GIS products and applications, including model builder, map layouts, toolboxes and geodatabases. Experience with Access database and developing FGDC or ISO compliant metadata. Knowledge of the biota of Arizona a plus.
The work context and position
The SDRS is a small research unit of the USGS Southwest Biological Science Center and is located on the University of Arizona campus. The student (or recent graduate) will be working with Dr. Kathryn Thomas http://profile.usgs.gov/kathryn_a_thomas.
The student assistant will be paid through a USGS student services contract with pay rate ranging from $15 to $25/hr depending on education. Taxes and social security deductions are not taken out of the salary; the student assistant will be responsible for reporting and paying those costs as an independent contractor. The position can be extended beyond graduation for up to 2 years, funding dependent. The student assistant position requires governmental security clearance, which may take several weeks to months, and will require paper-work prior to reporting to work.
