They will be accepting applicants until Sunday July 26th.  Applicants must apply using Audubon's careers portal.  The link for the position is below.  They hope to have the position filled in August.    https://careers-audubon.icims.com/jobs/2569/resource-manager/job    Early Alert – Position Outreach Notice    Research Ecologist,GS-0408-12
RWU 4552 Insects, Diseases, and Invasive Plants
Duty Station: Athens, GA or Pineville, LA
The Insects, Diseases, and Invasive Plants of Southern Forests unit (RWU 4552) of the Southern Research Station plans to advertise a vacancy for a permanent, full-time, Research Ecologist position with a focus on invasive plant research, at the GS-12 level (salary range $61,486 - $79,936 per year plus standard federal benefits).  There will be one position filled in either Athens, GA or Pineville, LA.       DUTIES   The scientist is responsible for conceiving, planning, organizing, designing, implementing, interpreting, and reporting individual and cooperative research.  The research focuses in two primary areas: 1) development and improvement of control tactics and integrated management methods and strategies for non-native invasive plant infestations in southern US forests, and 2) management strategies for restoring or creating desired conditions in native plant communities and forest ecosystems degraded by invasive species.  The scientist’s research therefore requires both an applied understanding of techniques used in integrated vegetation management and an ecological understanding of varied plant communities including forests, easements, and other natural areas.  This ecological understanding includes multi-trophic interactions, interrelationships among multiple plant and animal taxa, soils, climate, and disturbance. The scientist formulates an individual research program addressing problems of broad scope and complexity.  The scientist is an authority on invasive plant biology, ecology and management and is solely responsible for planning, designing, conducting, analyzing and developing knowledge from individual research.      In carrying out this research assignment, the scientist assembles cooperative alliances with various institutions such as the USFS National Forests, forest industry, and universities, in disciplines such as plant ecology and biology, forest management, entomology and pathology, soil science, and molecular approaches.  A working knowledge of plant taxonomy and ecology, plant physiology, invasion biology, biotic relationships (above- and below-ground), and invasive plant species control methods (e.g., chemical, mechanical, cultural and biological) is required.  The scientist devises new methodologies to address current and future barriers to sustainable forest and ecosystem management caused by non-native invasive plants.  Peer-reviewed journal publications, oral and poster presentations, consultations, and written recommendations are used to disseminate research results and information. Users of information and technology generated by the scientist include National Forest silviculturists, biologists and other managers, forest health specialists (state, federal, and international), commercial applicators, invasive plant councils, the academic scientific community, and the interested public.       INFORMATION ABOUT THE RWU 4552 DUTY STATIONS in ATHENS, GA and PINEVILLE, LA    Athens: The Athens location is in the Forestry Sciences Laboratory (320 Green Street, Athens, GA), on the south campus of the University of Georgia. The facility also houses Forest Service scientists in RWU 4156 (Center for Forest Disturbance Science), RWU 4952 (Integrating Human and Natural Systems), and Forest Health Protection. The university’s science library is located a block away and the departments of Entomology and Plant Pathology have extended adjunct faculty status to scientists in the unit. The Warnell School of Forestry, the Institute of Ecology, and the Department of Plant Biology are located across the street. In addition to opportunities to interact with the faculty, the School of Forestry provides space on the Whitehall Forest a short distance from campus, where the RWU has a small seed orchard, storage buildings, raised planting beds, and lath houses for experiments. The unit anticipates construction of a quarantine lab and greenhouse at Whitehall beginning in 2017. Scientists are also permitted to conduct experiments in the forest if conditions and space allow. The FS laboratory buildings on the Athens campus were built in the 1960s. Within the north building, the project has five fully-equipped laboratories devoted to tree pathology research, and four laboratories and an insectary for entomology research. A well-equipped shop is available for fabrication of research equipment. The Athens lab is located approximately 20 miles from the Scull Shoals Experimental Forest and 60 miles from the Hitchiti Experimental Forest. For more information about the community of Athens, visithttp://www.visitathensga.com/.    Pineville: The Pineville location is at the Alexandria Forestry Center (AFC) at 2500 Shreveport Highway, Pineville, LA. The AFC is one of the only facilities in the US to house units from all three branches of the Forest Service (Research and Development, National Forests, and State and Private Forestry) including  scientists in RWU 4704 (Utilization of Southern Forest Resources), RWU 4158 (Restoring Longleaf Pine Ecosystems), and Forest Health Protection.  Our unit occupies approximately 11,000 ft2 of laboratory, shop, and offices within the AFC.  Unit personnel occupy five research labs, 11 offices and a conference room. Outbuildings include a forestry lab and office, research insectary, storage buildings, and a greenhouse/climate-controlled insect rearing facility. The microbiology lab is well equipped with laminar flow hoods, growth chamber, refrigerator and microscopes. The insect ecology lab is equipped with a complete GC-EAD system for analyzing insect perception. The chemical analysis lab has two GC-MS equipped for qualitative, quantitative, and stereochemical analysis.  The acarology lab is well equipped with stereo and compound scopes and a scanning electron microscope.  Additional facilities allow for insect bioassays, insect rearing, seedling culture, insect taxonomic collections, and processing plant samples.   Pineville is located about 2 hour drive from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, providing unit staff with nearby opportunities for university collaboration. For more information about the community of Pineville, visithttp://www.pineville.net/.
We anticipate officially announcing the position in the near future, with an anticipated start date by January 11, 2016.  If you are interested in this position, please fill out and return the attached outreach form and send, with a copy of your CV/resume, to Dr. Bud Mayfield, Research Entomologist and Project Leader, USDA Forest Service, 200 WT Weaver Blvd, Asheville, NC 28804, or email toamayfield02 at fs.fed.us, byJuly 17, 2015.
