MAJOR FUNCTION    Implements natural areas work assignments.  Emphasis will be on implementing the prescribed fire and invasive species programs to restore and maintain natural areas.    ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES    Coordinates Natural Areas Operations Program and capable of carrying out instructions and projects with minimal supervision.  Supervises Environmental Lands and Invasive Plant Management staff.  Schedules and directs staff in daily activities related to the natural areas management.  Provides assistance to the Natural Areas Manager and Environmental Lands Stewardship Coordinator.Responsible for the prescribed fire program.  Participates in the execution of all facets of prescribed fire,including performing as the Burn Boss and occasionally as a burn crew member, conducting and participating in hot intense summer burning, extended mop-up, exposure to smoke as part of prescribed fire program, conducting site burn prep, and making minor repairs to burn equipment.  Coordinates fire activities with neighbors and appropriate agencies. Participates in all aspects of the invasive exotic species and invasive native species treatment/removal program which includes terrestrial and aquatic species for the Polk County managed environmental lands, lakes and rivers. Conducts pre- and post-treatment inspections for type and amount of invasive plants and effectiveness of control activities along with planning and scheduling of future control activities. Assists with control of various invasive animal species, including working with contractors on these tasks.  Keeps records of work performed and chemicals used.  Monitors natural communities for management needs and effects of management activities. Monitors ecosystems and their related facets, conducting research in areas having utility for future management decisions. Assists the Natural Areas Manager which includes but not limited to the development and implementation of the natural areas management plans by providing firsthand knowledge of properties and ground investigations and by ensuring natural areas stewardship projects are implemented.  Enters activity information into database/website and reviews area activity reports for accuracy for natural areas work and billing for contractors.    Assist with natural areas education outreach programs, including public speaking and making presentations. Represents the County in meetings with the public, press and other government entities to address aspects of the program.  Meets with the general public answering questions regarding information or complaints about the County’s Natural Areas operations.   Assists with implementing a nature-based recreation program. Assist with natural areas stewardship, including field work..  Responsible for performing simple field repairs of equipment. Assists Natural Areas Manager in management of budgets and work plans by identifying needs and projects.  Assists with program compliance with county, state and federal rules and laws.  Ability to work independently and with a team.  Operate various equipment to perform land management work.   Ability to understand the value of water resources, conservation of natural lands and resource management issues in Polk County.      Performs related duties as required.   KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS Knowledge of central Florida flora and fauna and natural habitats, invasive exotic species in Central Florida,  herbicide treatments, prescribed fire in theory and practice and nature-based recreation (passive recreation).  Knowledge of environmental lands management methods, techniques, and application processes within program operation and types of equipment used in natural areas operations.  Ability to supervise employees, creating a positive work environment.  Ability to maintain positive attitude and work well with visitors, volunteers and staff.  Ability to manage varied projects and to work independently and in workgroups as part of a team and to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.  Ability to use good judgment and make independent and collaborative decisions and to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with employees, officials and the public. Ability to work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.  Ability to work in the field under all types of conditions, including heat and rain and smoke.  Ability to see, talk, walk, bend, stoop, sit, stand, climb steps and drive. Agility to perform tasks in field operations. Ability to walk 2 miles on a daily basis.    - Prefer individual with completion of S130/190 Basic Wildland Firefighter and Engine Academy Training.
   - Prefer individual with; equipment operation and mechanical skills and good math skills in calculating chemical rates in relation to operation mixes. 
   - Prefer experience in project management and or report writing and multi-tasking.
 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Graduate of an accredited high school or possess an acceptable equivalency diploma and have a minimum of five (5) years experience in natural areas/environmental type work.    Florida Prescribed Burner Certification (Florida Certified Prescribed Burn Manager/Burn Boss). Employee must maintain a current Florida Certified Prescribed Burn Manager Certification (Burn Boss status) while in this position.    Must have a valid Florida driver's license at time of employment and be able to secure a valid Florida Class "A" CDL driver's license within one (1) year of employment within this classification.    Must have a Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Public Applicator License in the Aquatic or Natural Areas categorywithin ninety (90) days after employment in this classification and maintain license.    A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications with the exception of the required licensure.    JOB LOCATION: Parks and Natural Resources, 4177 Ben Durrance Rd, Bartow WORK SCHEDULE: The primary schedule for this position is Monday – Friday typically from 6:00 am – 2:30 pm or 7:00 am – 3:30 pm.   A flexible schedule on occasions is a requirement of this position.
