PhD Climate Scientist
Job Description
Climate Central seeks a PhD-level Climate Scientist, with a passion for studying and communicating the impacts of climate change on the American West. Areas of interest and expertise for strong candidates may include, but are not limited to, historical and future changes in climate trends and the impacts of climate change on drought and water resources, agriculture, wildfires, wildlife, forests and rangelands, public health, and energy resources.
The Climate Scientist will work closely with our team of scientists, data analysts and visualizers, and research associates to develop research programs and reports designed to be newsworthy and enhance the public’s and decision maker’s understanding of climate change.
Responsibilities
* Identify and develop research projects that cultivate the public’s understanding of climate change and its impacts in the U.S., and particularly in the West.
* Conduct scientifically rigorous analyses in these project areas to produce reports or communication products that will captivate public attention and awareness of climate change issues, with average project turn-around times of 2-5 months.
* Contribute to rapid-response climate change science and impacts communication opportunities in the news cycle, where possible.
* Develop and review Climate Central communication materials, particularly for scientific accuracy, which may include scientific reports, outreach material for our TV Meteorologist Program, and website news content.
* Serve as a media contact and spokesperson for climate science and climate change impacts.
* Identify potential scientific and communication collaborations that can enhance the scope of Climate Central’s research portfolio and outreach.
* Sustain a strong scientific relationship with academic and non-profit organization research peers, including attending and presenting at scientific conferences, publishing in peer-reviewed research journals, and relevant research collaborations.
Qualifications
* PhD in relevant field, including earth and/or atmospheric science, environmental science, climate dynamics, water resource management, or ecology (other fields may be considered).
* The candidate should have an in-depth knowledge of climate science and the scientific community’s consensus on key aspects of climate change science, and be comfortable speaking on the topic to a general audience.
* Strong written communication skills, comfort with public speaking, and evidence of creativity in communication and visualizing climate science data.
* Experience managing research projects and teams to produce scientifically accurate results and/or reports in a timely manner.
