This position serves an integral role on the District’s resource management team, which includes over 30 state parks from St. Johns county south to Indian River county and west to Pasco county. This is a specialized, professional position performing monitoring and participating in resource management activities in support of a the Florida Park Service in District 3. Land management, exotic control, monitoring, habitat improvement/restoration, and prescribed fire are principal areas of expertise. Knowledge of the natural communities of Florida, its flora and fauna, and associated land management practices is preferred. Mechanical skills are preferred. State vehicles are used in the performance of these duties. JOB DUTIES: Plan, recommend, monitor, and conduct resource management projects including prescribed burning, exotic species removal, reforestation, plant community restoration, erosion control, pest species control and native wildlife management. Assist with natural community maintenance and restoration. Research current resource management methodologies to stay abreast of developments in new techniques and technologies, and conveys information gained to other staff and parks. Research is directed at inventory, monitoring, and answering resource management questions. Create maps using ArcGIS or other mapping program to use for various projects. Conduct plant and animal surveys and monitoring, including those related to listed species management and exotic species inventory, and for assembling and maintaining various resource management databases. Assist with the development and revision of park unit management plans. Attend public meetings and workshops. Investigate and report on activities which may have detrimental effects on park resources. Attend public hearings on these projects to present the Division’s official statement. Participate in the resource management evaluation and land management review programs as assigned. Prepare resource related grant proposals and budget items. Manage grant projects and resource budget items. Review permit applications and prepare permit applications for projects. Conduct training sessions and interpretive programs for park personnel, students, resource management specialists and laymen in the techniques of resource management and natural history topics. Participate at Ranger Academy as needed. Maintain an office to include: correspondence files, email and reference library; specification writing, monthly reports and miscellaneous correspondence; maintain A-V equipment, camera, vehicle and office equipment as assigned. Performs other related duties as required. May volunteer to snorkel. Perform related work as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES, INCLUDING UTILIZATION OF EQUIPMENT, REQUIRED FOR THE POSITION: Knowledge of: the terminology, principles and analytical techniques of the physical or natural sciences; terminology, management principles and practices of prescribed fire and wildfire suppression; data collection and analysis principles and procedures; Florida flora, both native and exotic; Skill in: all aspects of prescribed burning and wildfire suppression, from planning through implementation and evaluation; plan development; GIS use; GPS use; Ability to: coordinate a complex natural resource management program; collect, evaluate, analyze and interpret scientific or technical data; prepare technical reports; understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to environmental programs; deal with the public in a tactful and courteous manner; work independently; plan, organize and coordinate work assignments; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; create maps maintain useful information in GIS; operate at GPS; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; utilize problem solving techniques; operate fire equipment and miscellaneous small equipment; operate motor vehicles; operate chain saws; work nights, weekends, and holidays. Other job-related requirements for this position: Successful completion of annual moderate pack test is required. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Prior to being hired, applicant will be given a single opportunity to take and successfully complete a supervised moderate pack test at a date and location to be announced. Pack test requires applicant to complete a two mile walk while carrying 25 lbs in less than 30 minutes. PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES FOR THE POSITION: A bachelor’s or graduate degree in one of the physical or natural sciences plus a minimum of four years of professional experience related to land management, research, monitoring, natural community restoration, wildlife management, or forestry. Professional experience as described above can be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the college education. Certified State of Florida Prescribed Burner Certification is preferred.
