Saturday, April 5: Santa Rita Hit and Run
It may be pretty dry by April, so we will stop where there may still be a little water in the soil, such as Florida Canyon and a few stops along Box Canyon Road. With a little luck, we will find a broad cross-section of low to mid elevation spring plants in and around the lovely sky island of the northern Santa Ritas. Field trip leader is Ries Lindley. Meet at 7:20 a.m. at Fry’s Shopping Center, Irvington just east of I-10. We will be east of the Texas Roadhouse and south of Fry’s. Group size limit: 4 Vehicles. Parking will be limited at some stops. Please RSVP to Diane Kelly: plants at timdarby.net
Volunteer Work Days
Sonoran Desert Weedwackers in Tucson Mountain Park
The Sonoran Desert Weedwackers are an outgrowth of the Tucson Chapter, and a force to be reckoned with! They have regular work days the third Saturday of every month. Pima County staff provide digging bars and gloves; the group is transported to the worksite by a Pima County van. Volunteers learn the difference between native and invasive grasses onsite. Experienced Weedwackers demonstrate the proper digging techniques in the field.
To get involved in Pima County, send a message to the Tucson Mountain Weedwacker volunteer coordinator Marilyn Hanson<mailto:mfhanson at comcast.net> at mfhanson at comcast.net<mailto:mfhanson at comcast.net>

Steve Buckley is the botanist for the National Park Service's Southwest Network Collaborative (SWNC) and is based in Tucson. His research focuses on the systematics and floristic biogeography of National Park Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, and Bureau of Land Management lands in the desert southwestern United States. Steve is especially interested in how the technologies of floristic information systems generate novel solutions for the distribution of information and develop critical data sets to address the challenges of botanical conservation on Department of Interior lands.
Wednesday, May 14: Charlotte Pearson (Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research) - "Tree Rings, People, and Volcanic Eruptions"
Charlotte Pearson presents an intro to dendrochronology and some case studies for what the record from the bristlecone pine and other chronological records can tell us about the impact of volcanic events and climatic changes on human populations. Charlotte came to the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research (LTRR) from Cornell University, where she worked as Laboratory Manager and Research Associate in the The Malcolm and Carolyn Wiener Laboratory for Aegean and Near Eastern Dendrochronology. Her main interests lie in Mediterranean dendroarchaeology, as she works with others at LTRR to build a continuous oak tree-ring chronology for the Mediterranean for the last 10,000 years. She hopes to contribute to wider research on human and environmental interactions and investigate the causalities of major turning points in human history.
