Two Seasonal Field Assistants. The Rizzo lab at the UC Davis Department of Plant Pathology seeks two field assistants to assist in study of forest diseases. One position is located in the Big Sur region of central coastal California and will assist resurvey of long-term study plots to quantify the spread and impacts of Sudden Oak Death (SOD). The second assistant will be based in Davis CA and will include extensive travel in the Sierra Nevada to resurvey long-term study plots focused on native Heterobasidion root pathogens. Each position will begin in mid-June and end mid-late September. Essential duties include accurate re-measurement of tree diameter, vegetation censuses, woody debris/fuel quantification, soil collection, identification of pathogen symptoms, and collection of symptomatic plant material for further analysis at the laboratory based in Davis, CA. Both positions require attention to detail, the ability to work as part of a larger team in the field, and excellent quality control in the transfer of specimens and data to the main lab. Both positions requires excellent physical shape; field work will entail long days, strenuous hiking, and the ability to lift and hike with heavy backpacks (up to 50 lbs) on uneven terrain with very steep slopes. Additionally, field work in the Sierra Nevada will include 3-4 day-long field excursions, car-camping at remote front-country sites, and some day-trips based out of Davis. The position based in Big Sur will also include occasional overnight backpacking. Ideal candidates will have experience conducting vegetation surveys, orienting in the back country or off trail, identifying plants in CA coastal forests and/or Sierra forests, and preventing or mediating the impacts of biting insects and poison oak. The ability to collect high quality data through repetitive measurement is essential. The positions also require a positive attitude, enthusiasm for learning, the ability to work as part of a team, and the interpersonal skills needed to work and live closely with other team members. For the position based in Big Sur, housing will be provided at UC’s Big Creek Reserve. Both positions will pay commensurate with experience. Applications will be considered until the position is filled, but preferably should be submitted before April 15th. Please send a brief statement of interest with a resume including contact information for three references. Candidates applying for the SOD position based in Big Sur should email these materials to Kerri Frangioso (kfrangioso at ucdavis.edu<mailto:kfrangioso at ucdavis.edu>); candidates applying for the Sierra Nevada position based in Davis, CA should email these materials to Richard Cobb (rccobb at ucdavis.edu<mailto:rccobb at ucdavis.edu>).
