Summer Field Assistant Opportunity: Conifer seedling study in Sierra Nevada

I seek a field assistant for summer work on a research project studying the role of microclimate in conifer seedling establishment and how the spatial distribution of microclimates may change given projected climates. The successful applicant will help 1) conduct conifer seedling surveys, 2) make microclimate measurement (potential evaporation, soil moisture, radiation), and 3) scan the study site with terrestrial LiDAR. The project is located in Sequoia National Park – a gorgeous place to gain field experience!

**Duration: 40 days with likely extension to 60 days in 6-7 trips, late-May through September
**Start date: May 23 or asap there after
**Compensation: $10-13/hr, depending on experience.
**Location: Sequoia National Park. Transportation to and from park provided. Accommodations include a tent camping area, running water, full kitchen with electricity, shower, and (nice) pit toilets. Applicants will need their own tent and personal field gear.

**Requirements:
1) Attention to detail
2) Strong work ethic
3) Good communication skills
4) Flexible schedule and willingness to work over weekends
5) Ability to hike 3 miles (1000’ elevation gain/loss) one way to / from site and work for long hours at 8200’ in rough terrain in cold to hot weather with mosquitoes
6) No prior experience in the specific tasks are needed – only a willingness to learn and ask questions.
7) Individuals with current enrollment and/or completion of a degree in the natural resources, biology, ecology, or a related field are preferred. Previous environmental or biological science field work is a plus.

**Contact: Danielle Christianson, dsvehla at berkeley.edu<mailto:dsvehla at berkeley.edu>
Please submit the following:
1) a CV with any relevant experience that demonstrates requirements listed above
2) a few sentences of why you are interested
3) your availability/flexibility during the May to September 2012 time frame
4) a contact email and phone number

** Position will remain open until filled.
