2012 Range Field Day - "A Systems Approach to Solving Rangeland Management Issues"

Lost Resources: John S. Forsman
John S. Forsman, a charter member and life member of the Society for Range Management, passed away on June 8th at the age of 95. He grew up on a homestead north of Glasgow, Montana. He completed high school in Glasgow and went on to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Forestry with an emphasis in Rangeland Management at the University of Montana. He worked summers during college for the US Forest Service as a lookout and packer.
During World War II he was stationed in England where he was the lead navigator for a squadron of B17 Flying Fortress bombers. He flew 30 bombing missions over Germany. He met Betty Townson who was in England's Royal Air Force. They were married shortly after the war in Helena, Montana.
John's career with the US Forest Service included; Range Analysis Crew Chief out of the Northern Regional Office in Missoula, District Ranger on the Lewis and Clark NF, Range Staff and then Forest Supervisor on the Custer NF, on the Range Staff in the Chief's office in Washington, DC and Assistant Regional Forester for Range and Wildlife for the Pacific Northwest Region in Portland, Oregon where he retired in 1976.
He is survived by his wife Betty, daughters Carol and Victoria, son Rick, eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

May 16, 2012. In just over a month the 2012 NAIPSC will take place in North Platte, NE. Organizers have extended the registration deadline for the 3-day course to June 18, 2012. If you are thinking about attending the NAIPSC and have not been able to decide, here are some things to consider:
* The 14 instructors teaching at the NAIPSC represent 8 states, including North Carolina, Kansas, Wyoming, Montana, Oregon, Idaho, South Carolina, Nebraska, and Oklahoma.
* There will be 3 separate workshops on topics related to plant identification, invasive plant physiology, and technology for locating and mapping plants.
* The materials provided to participants include 3 books, a CD for identifying plants in North America, and the 2012 NAIPSC binder.

The 2012 Tri-State Conservation Grazing Workshop will bring together natural resource professionals and livestock producers from ND, SD and MN to learn more about the application of livestock grazing as a grassland management and conservation tool. On Aug. 21, participants will learn about the current opportunities, information, and challenges of managing grassland habitats and achieving conservation objectives with livestock. On August 22, the workshop will consist of a field tour and on-site discussions about livestock grazing for conservation objectives.
