[http://www.altarvalleyconservation.org/media/uploads/PeopleatWorkElk-LDProject.jpg] The Elkhorn/Las Delicias Demo Project Installation
Many, many, many thanks to everyone who volunteered their time and energy to make the Elkhorn/Las Delicias Demo Project installation a success! A generous grant from Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold Foundation funded the project. The project team of Steve Carson, Bill Zeedyk, David Seibert, Bill Kidd, Jason Cathcart, Jerome Miller and Forrest Sherman worked tirelessly for over two weeks in January 2012 to install erosion control and road drainage structures. We were delighted to see a variety of agencies stop by to check out the project and lend a helping hand: Border Patrol, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge were all on site, along with Borderlinks and a group of students from Williams College. The Volunteers for Outdoor Arizona and Sky Island Alliance volunteer crews were fantastic, as were the many individuals who came to help out through their own initiative. THANK YOU!

Want to get back out to the Altar Valley to volunteer? Missed the Elkhorn/Las Delicias Demo Project but are curious about what's next? The Alliance is once again teaming up with the Volunteers for Outdoor Arizona to host a volunteer event on the King's Anvil Ranch. Part of the AVCA Restoration Program is the reintroduction of fire, which is a critical component of Sonoran Desert grasslands. To reintroduce fire through controlled burns, the Endangered Species Act requires a survey of the Pima Pineapple Cactus. This volunteer event will contribute to survey work necessary to implement a controlled burn. Volunteers will locate and mark each cactus and then obtain a GPS location. We'd love to have you, even if it's just for one day! Sign up will go through the VoAZ, so click here<http://www.brinkmailer.com/mailer/stats/click/89396/job6BIYuQFZQQKgeuIfnaC1RzlV6tcqs/aHR0cDovL3d3dy52b2F6Lm9yZy92aWV3ZXZlbnQuYXNweD9ldmVudGlkPTY4NQ==> to find out more. Tom Sheridan, University of Arizona professor and AVCA Community Representative, has revised and expanded his acclaimed book, Arizona: A History, just in time for Arizona's centennial celebration. The revision includes events and changes that have taken place in recent years. It addresses contemporary issues like land use, water rights, dramatic population increases, suburban sprawl, and the US-Mexico border. As the University of Arizona Press says, "No other book on Arizona history is as integrative or comprehensive."
