Graduate Research Assistant Position

Water and Wastewater Scenario Planning
Resilient and Sustainable Infrastructure Systems

University of Arizona

An ongoing project funded by the National Science Foundation examines the
opportunities and triple bottom line (environmental, social, economic)
costs of integrating water and wastewater planning. The goal of the project
is
to better understand decentralized treatment and dual water supply options
as a means to
extend scarce water supplies and develop tools that allow decision makers to
formulate sustainability, resilient, and robust long-term community
infrastructure plans.

We are looking for a PhD candidate (or advanced Masters) to work as part of
an
interdisciplinary team in the process of implementing scenario planning for
water and wastewater systems in Tucson, with applicability to other
water-scarce, high-growth regions.  Scenario planning is an interactive,
applied technique that addresses multiple uncertainties (climate, water
resources, infrastructure, social preference, decision-making) through the
integration of data analysis and stakeholder outreach.  This approach is a
key
method in adaptive water management.

The ideal candidate for this position will have a background in
environmental
science, geography, arid lands, or related field, and should have experience
working with stakeholders, the public, and planners. Familiarity with GIS is
a
plus.  Quantitative modeling is not required; instead, this is undertaken by
faculty and students in multiple UA engineering departments.  However, the
GRA
in this position will work closely with the modelers as well as utility
partners from Pima County and the City of Tucson.

For details on the assistantship, contact Dr. Christopher Scott
<cascott at email.arizona.edu> at the University of Arizona's Udall Center for
Studies in Public Policy, and School of Geography & Development.

The candidate selected to receive the assistantship will have a full tuition
waiver and receive a stipend (at 20 hours per week) with benefits
starting Fall 2011.  Pending satisfactory progress with project-related
research and
with the student's course of study, additional funding may be available.
