Hi,
We are once again seeking help with the ANLS Junior (4-H & FFA) and
Intercollegiate Judging Contests to be held on Saturday, Dec. 31, 2011
at the Arizona State Fairgrounds in Phoenix. Both of these contests
are held on the same day and requires extensive help in order to pull
the contests off and show the professionalism people expect from the
University of Arizona and the ANLS. Many of you have helped with the
contest in the past and we are soliciting your help once again. I am
chair of the Junior Judging Contest and Dean Fish and Dave Schafer are
co-chairs of the Intercollegiate Judging Contest.
We need people to help with:
1. Registration: 2 people for each contest
2. Livestock Judging Contest Coordinator for all barns:
3. Livestock Barn Coordinators (helping get animals together for the
contests in the different barns and returned to correct pens after
contests)
Sheep: Coordinator, plus 2 more needed
Beef: Coordinator, plus 2 more needed
Swine: Coordinator; plus need 3 to 4 more people
Jeff Schalau has offered to help here again.
We have individual pens for the contests for each hog. These panels
will be put side by side for each class and will prevent the problems
we have had in the past with animals fighting. We just need to have
someone to help keep the hogs apart as they travel to and from the
contest staging areas. Some of the judging team coaches may not like
this arrangement, but seems to be getting more and more difficult to
keep hogs separated, even for experienced handlers.
4. Transportation of Contest Animals (Using Truck and Stock Trailer):
3 to 6 people with trucks and trailers needed here
Bopper Cannon has offered to help here again.
5. Contest areas coordinators (Helping coordinate placement of class animals):
we could use a 2-3 people here
6. Livestock Floater: Need 1 person with experience with all types of
livestock to be used for emergency help as needed when there's need
for another person.
7. Tabulation: Dave Schafer will be chief person in charge
could use 3 or 4 more people to help here
8. Reasons Coordinator (To coordinate the contestants giving oral reasons)
Need 3 people for each contest;
9. Card Runners: Need 2 people for each contest and for reasons
10. Announcer for both junior and intercollegiate contests
Need 1 person for each event.
11. Experienced judges with intercollegiate judging experience to
serve as judges and reasons takers for the 4-H/FFA contest.
Need 6 people for reasons takers, can have less judges if need be.
12. Livestock Handlers:
We need experienced youth or adult volunteers here and could use your
help in securing these people. We need about 12 cattle handlers plus 8
hog handlers to be with animals during the contests.
However, it would be good to have more handlers here so people can rotate.
If any of you have ideas on youth who can assist with this contest we
will be greatly appreciative. We will provide them free lunch and free
admittance and parking to the stock show.
Please review the above list and let Dean Fish, Dave Schafer, and I
know how you can help out (respond to cc list above).
If you are a barn coordinator, you will need to be there from 6 AM
until around 12 PM on the 31st. Reasons for the Junior Judging Contest
usually lasts until about 3:00 PM. The Junior Judging Contest
registration starts at 8:30 AM in the Coliseum and the Intercollegiate
registration starts at 7:30 AM in the Ag Center on the 31st. The
Junior Judging Contest Awards ceremony is at 4:30 PM in the Coliseum.
If any of you need to contact me by phone, the best way is by cell
phone (928) 970-0589.
Thanks for helping us out and we look forward to working with you.
Please contact me by either phone or email and let me know your
availability and your job preference so we can plan accordingly.
Thanks,
Jim Sprinkle
