IYRP North America Rangeland Stories Film Festival Needs You!!

We are looking for Rangelands Partners who have an interest in the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) to join our team and to assist with the planning, judging, and logistics for an IYRP North America Film Festival. We already have established a small working group from the IYRP North America Communications Team as well as some initial plans, but we need help to make the Film Festival shine! Anticipated time commitment for team members is estimated to be 10-20 hours over the course of the next year, with meetings and correspondence occurring virtually through email and occasional zoom meetings. Please consider helping us gather, review, and showcase films that will share the importance of rangelands to a broad audience! If you are interested in helping out, or for more information, contact Courtney Buchanan at cbuchan3 at uwyo.edu<mailto:cbuchan3 at uwyo.edu> by June 20th.

About the film festival:
The IYRP North America Film Festival seeks entries that tell stories of rangelands and the people that live and work on these lands. Selected films will be highlighted during a virtual event this coming winter (likely at SRM and at a Rangelands Partnership Roundup), during other IYRP outreach activities, and shared on the IYRP North America website. We invite students, producers, extension personnel, and other rangeland professionals with an interest in film-making to submit short films (10 minute maximum length) that highlight experiences with or understandings of rangelands. Films should tell a rangeland story that connects personal experiences to broader issues rangeland managers face in the 21st century such as sustaining biodiversity, providing ecosystem services, producing livestock sustainably, creating systems resilient to droughts, and more. Filmmakers may want to consider focusing on one of the 12 monthly themes of the IYRP (see graphic below). Films should tell captivating stories which a diverse audience can relate to, and that can help spread the appreciation and importance of rangelands and those that manage them to a wide audience. Imagine showing your film to an audience in Los Angeles, Denver, Seattle, or New York- what impactful experiences in rangelands can you share? We also welcome submissions by established filmmakers or outreach organizations with films relevant to the 12 IYRP themes.

Possible tasks include:

  * Help design effective outreach materials to foster participation
  * Sharing the call for films within your networks to increase participation
  * Reaching out to other film festivals
  * Reaching out to organizations that may have films to submit
  * Helping design the website for the film festival
  * Helping to secure prizes for the top films
  * Creating rubric and judging films
  * And more: share any of your other expertise with the team
