Hello Rangelands Partnership. For your consideration, see below a message from Maryam Niamir-Fuller, Co-Chair of the International Support Group for the IYRP, plus a note from the publisher of the Nomadic Peoples journal. If there are enough paid subscriptions to the Nomadic Peoples journal, they will be able to go open access.

As Maryam points out Nomadic Peoples “started as mostly a journal for anthropological research back in the 1980s but has evolved considerably today to a far more integrated, peer reviewed and esteemed journal.”

FYI, the University of Arizona Libraries provides access to this journal.

Dear Layne and Lauren
I am wondering whether IAC would be interested/the right vehicle, to spread this word around? I hope you have read the Nomadic Peoples Journal before. It started as mostly a journal for anthropological research back in the 1980s but has evolved considerably today to a far more integrated, peer reviewed and esteemed journal. For full disclosure, I am a member of the Editorial Board. Many universities that I know of subscribe to it. Despite its title, it focuses on all types of pastoralism.

It appears now that the Publishers are willing to turn it into an open access journal if the number of subscriptions in 2023 rises high enough (see below message from Saverio our Main Editor).

Would IAC be willing to spread the word and encourage more subscriptions in 2023, so that we can achieve an Open Access status?

Subject: publication of NP 26.2... and news from our publisher

… NP is moving towards becoming open access, and without fee for publication.

Please see below a note from the publisher:

We hope that Nomadic Peoples will become Open Access in 2023, by means of a ’Subscribe to Open’ project, whereby — if we receive sufficient subscription revenue — the year’s issues flip to Open Access, in perpetuity.

This is an important step for the journal as it will allow much more equitable access to its content, particularly for those in the Global South or otherwise under-resourced, who would not normally be able to afford to read paywalled content.

To this end, it would be much appreciated if you could encourage your institutions to (re)subscribe for 2023, emphasising that, in doing so, they will be contributing to the Open Access project.

The revenue required to flip to Open Access is almost equivalent to current annual subscription income so we really can’t afford to lose any subscriptions and would like to gain a few to protect the initiative in the future.

Please share the news widely. If insufficient revenue is attained, subscribing institutions will receive the issues/access they have paid for but the journal will remain paywalled to others.

You can read more about the initiative here: https://www.whpress.co.uk/publications/2886-2/

Kind regards,
Saverio
