Hi Rangeland Westerners!

Since you are all part of the cool kids that like techie things, I thought I'd give you a preview of the mobile app program for the upcoming 2015 SRM meeting in Sacramento that I've been working on. The rest of SRM membership will get to play with it next Monday.

To get the Guidebook App (used to create the mobile SRM Meeting) follow the steps below:

Step 1: At your computer go to http://guidebook.com/g/SRM2015<http://guidebook.com/g/SRM2015>

You should see a screen that looks like this:

Step 2: Click on the blue button with the apple icon if you have an IPhone or IPad. If you have an Android phone click on its button. If you want to load the app on a Windows-based laptop click on its button. (Note: not all features, e.g. interactive maps, run on a laptop)

I'll walk you through the rest of the steps for the Apple IOS. It's similar for the Android and Windows systems.

It will pop up a window that looks like this for the IPhone or IPad:

Step 3: Type in your cell phone number in the box that says phone number.
Step 4: Click on the Text me the link! Button.
Step 5: Open the text message that was sent to your IPhone. It will say Download Guidebook: http://guidebook.com/getit/?sms
Step 6: Touch the url: http://guidebook.com/getit/?sms inside the text message. This will load the Guidebook app onto your phone.
Step 7: Find the Guidebook app on your phone. The icon looks like this:

Step 8: Touch it to load. A screen will come up only the very first time with the option to download a guide. Don't try to search for the SRM 2015 Managing Diversity. Instead near the bottom of the screen will be a place that asks for a Redeem Code. Type in SRM2015 in that box. You will only need to do this one time. This will download our guide to your phone and you'll seen the main screen. Touch that screen and it will show a whole bunch of fun things to explore. Different dates will drop down from the top when you look at the schedules, for example, and you'll be able to create your own schedule from all the choices. If you like maps, they are all interactive - they show you stuff when you touch them - like what's in a room in the convention center for that date. While we haven't gone live yet, don't worry as the guide will update automatically every time you open it if I've made any changes.

Click on the READ ME First Folder for some more information and to fill out a brief demographic survey. That survey will give use information on who is using the app. There are some pdf's that show you how to create custom business cards through the Attendees icon for sharing while at the meeting.

We will have individual presenters listed with their respective times under the workshops, symposia and oral technical sessions and you will be able to add them to your My Schedule. For poster presenters we have their respective poster titles listed under the two poster sessions, but because they don't have a specific time slot you won't be able to add their precise title to My Schedule. Instead you'll be able to select their title and add it to your personal To Do list in the app.

Every session has the ability to get a star ranking and specific oral presentations will have a session evaluation survey.

I've created a file folder for the Daily Trail Boss and I'll upload the pdf to the app every day it is done. Another neat feature to check out is the Social Media area. Attendees will be able to tweet to #SRM2015 their comments. I've also included links to Facebook and LinkedIn Range pages or groups. Attendees will also be able to take and share photos from this area too.

There is a planning meeting contact icon that lists all the CalPac members emails and, if provided, their cell phone numbers.

If the Board members want a contact list, Leonard send it to me in a spreadsheet and we can put that in the app too.

The Schedule by Events is one of the most useful features and is the best way to add to the personalized My Schedule. For planning this where you'll spend the most time!

As I mentioned the maps are interactive. The Maps icon shows all of the maps for the hotels and conference center. These can be blown up to get more detail and if a room is clicked on it will show what's going on in that room. Maps often appear with a particular session to help you find where you're going. If anyone does a walking tour, the map feature has the ability to geo-position where you are and calculate a route to get there.

The email feature is only a one-way communication from the programmer to the app holders. Emergency room changes or cancellations would be how I envision that feature working.

The notes are for everyone to jot down whatever. The To Do will also set reminders as does My Schedule, e.g. 10 mins, 1 hour, etc.

That's a pretty quick overview. Just remember that changing a date is usually done from the top of the screen. If you see little dots at the bottom of the screen that means you can swipe to the left to see more choices. The three bars in the top left will allow you to see your business cards (if you create any) and your connections. You can also share the guide from that screen. Swipe to the right to return to the fist screen.

Enjoy!
