<u><span style="color:black">Talk Title: Maize Genomes to Phenomes: Insights into Nitrogen Response, Disease Resistance, and Canopy Architecture</span></u><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:8.0pt;line-height:11.75pt;background:white">
<span style="color:black">Understanding the genetic basis of complex traits in maize is crucial for enhancing agricultural productivity and sustainability. This talk will describe recent advancements in genetics, genomics, and phenomics for three key traits:
nitrogen response, disease resistance (with a focus on tar spot disease), and canopy architecture. Nitrogen, a fundamental nutrient for plant growth, plays a critical role in determining maize yield. The focus here will be on understanding hybrid response
to nitrogen, with the goal of optimizing nitrogen usage in maize cultivation. The second section of the presentation will focus on the genetic underpinnings of tar spot disease resistance to reveal strategies for enhancing the resilience of maize crops against
this emerging pathogen. The final segment will adopt a more wholistic view of plant phenomics to describe and quantify maize canopy architecture. The way maize plants arrange their leaves and structure their canopies has far-reaching implications for light
capture, photosynthesis, and crop productivity. This research not only advances our understanding of maize genetics but also holds practical implications for crop improvement. By unraveling the genetics and phenomics complexities from the molecular level to
observable traits, our objective is to shed light on novel strategies for enhancing maize crops, ensuring sustainable agriculture, and meeting the challenges of a changing world.</span><o:p></o:p></p>
