Yet\, it is also experiencing extreme population growth\, with a current population of 7 million expected to top 10 million in the next 25 years. To maintain sustainable water supplies for irrigation of food crops\, Ariz ona has been at the forefront of water reuse. Though technologies are in p lace to produce extremely clean potable water through wastewater reclamati on\, there are still questions to be addressed: does recycled wastewater\, which can contain trace levels of contaminants\, spread antibiotic resist ance into soils and food crops\, endangering public health? Are the reside nts of Arizona supportive of using recycled water for crop irrigation? Whe re do we need to focus our research on water reclamation technology to ens ure a healthy and sustainable food supply? This talk will include current understanding\, as well as the unknowns\, regarding antibiotic resistance and its connection to wastewater.\n\n\nJean McLain is a Research Specialis t in the University of Arizona Department of Environmental Science\, and A ssistant Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Jean’s re search expertise is in establishing the applicability of recycled municipa l wastewater for crop irrigation\, replenishment of surface water\, ground water recharge\, and human consumption.\n\n\n\nJean holds a Bachelor of Sc ience Degree in Forestry from the University of Vermont\, and a Master’s Degree in Forest Science from Yale University.
