I am a professor of

environmental soil science in the Department of Agronomy and Soils at

Auburn University. For the past 20 years I have taught and done research

regarding carbon and nutrient cycling in managed and natural ecosystems

around the world. I have keen interest in how land management impacts

ecosystem carbon sequestration. In that regard, I am now working with the

Institute for Sustainable International Studies (ISIS) to offer a course

that will examine carbon cycling with particular emphasis on land

management impacts on carbon sequestration in Belizean soils. The course

will include some classroom time, some field time, and some laboratory

time. The course will be taught in conjunction with Dr. Ed Boles, an

ecologist and long-time resident of Belize. The course is best suited to

upper level undergraduates and graduate students. This is an excellent

opportunity for students to earn college credit, gain valuable practical

experience, and of course, do it all in Central America’s conservation

capital, Belize.

My course is paired with a course taught by Dr. Boles on Watershed

Ecosystems and Conservation, and our two courses will be taught from June

3 – July 2. They are part of a number of courses being offered this

summer during in two sessions over June and July. The courses are

described in more detail in the attached flyer. Students take two

intensive courses over the period of one month. The fee for the program

is $3975, which includes tuition, field trips, housing and local

transportation. Please circulate this flyer to others who may have an

interest in soil science, tropical agriculture, watershed ecology or

environmental science. The syllabi are available online through the

organization with which I work, the Institute for Sustainable

International Studies (ISIS), www.isisbelize.com. Cynthia Reece, our

Program Manager with ISIS, will respond to questions related to housing,

travel planning, course costs, and custom programs, creece@isisbelize.com.

There are also opportunities with the ISIS for faculty to teach or bring

their own students groups to Belize.
