Today is the day everyone! Your scholarship application is due at 11:95 pm, today, April 1st. I know that I have been sending you constant updates and notifications about the scholarship application, and that's probably been annoying to you - I understand if you are. c: I'm not even sure that these frequent emails have worked, as many of you still waited until today or the weekend to apply (I saw the data); I am proud of you for doing so though. c: For those of you who haven't still, or are considering not applying, I would like to share a word of warning, and a bit of my own experience, that will hopefully encourage you to apply.

When I was an undergraduate student, much like yourself, I did not apply for scholarships. I figured that there were too many other students applying, and that I would never get a chance to get any of that money, so I wouldn't put in the effort. However, now, I wish that I had. I will not disclose the specifics of how much money I owe a certain government body, but it is not a small amount, and it would probably make you balk. My goal with all these emails, was to try to help some of you avoid that moment of stomach-churning reality, even if only a little bit. Some of the amounts up for grabs for Plant Sciences students are not small, and I know firsthand that even small amounts for some can be the difference between making rent and not. The scholarships that I got later during my masters' program were sometimes the difference between getting my medication or not - it is an unfortunate, but important thing to understand as young adults finding your way in the world. Yes, not everyone will be able to be awarded the CALES CAS Scholarship, there are too many of you that are all too wonderful to ensure everyone has a substantial piece. But if you don't apply, you guarantee that you don't get anything.

I don't mean to fearmonger, or to make you feel guilty or anything like that - I just want to make sure that those of you who have waited, understand that the only thing standing between you and a chance at a gift bag of money is a single application. One that I hope that everyone makes a grab for. c:

  *   Who: All CALES students are eligible. Undergraduate and graduate; all CALES majors, certificates, and minors; all campuses; current and new students; all GPAs.
  *   What: Over $1.1 million available.
  *   By When: Deadline to apply is 11:59pm, April 1, 2024.
