Position Description: Lab Volunteer/Lab Assistant

Purpose of Position: To assist researchers with their lab work and gain research laboratory experience in microbiology and food safety.
Task Descriptions/Specific Duties:

  *   Preparing microbiological media, dilution buffers, reagents, etc.  used in different research projects
  *   Cleaning the lab, equipment calibration and maintenance, washing laboratory glassware
  *   Assisting in research projects such as collecting samples, spread plating, counting colonies, etc.
  *   Participating in large team projects, lab meetings, outreach activities, etc.
  *   Presentation of research orally and via posters, if involved in research projects
  *   Opportunities for co-authorship in publications, if contributing significantly to data collection
  *   Opportunities to attend professional meetings and present research

Commitment: The commitment will vary during the academic year. Summer volunteer hours will be a minimum of 6 hours per week, minimum 3 hours per day. During regular Fall/Spring semester the schedule can be varied based on class schedule availability.

Training: All training will be provided. However, students who have knowledge in basic microbiology techniques are preferred.

Benefits: Federal work study is available for those who qualify. Alternatively, students can earn up to 3-6 lab credits for Directed Research MIC 492, or Independent Study MIC 399/499, MIC 399H/499H (Honors), if permitted by the academic advisor.
