Hey Gene,

Hope you're well!

We met at the Aglanta conference back in February and I recall you saying that your students might be interested in joining Square Roots post graduation. We're about to kick off recruiting for our third cohort so I'm reaching out to you before this process kicks off to gauge interest from your students and/or others in your network.

As you know Square Roots doesn't just grow produce; we also cultivate and grow the next generation of professional farmers through a year long program we call The Next-Gen Farmer Training Program.

Through the experience participants learn several things ranging from agriculture to community development. Program participants will:

  * Grow food hydroponically, and vertically, in our newly designed shipping containers working closely with our staff farmers.
  * Learn about marketing and sales by working with Square Roots' sales channels and engage with local food suppliers and customers
  * Participate in project based learning inclusive of a business and community component
  * Engage with local community by hosting workshops and events aiming to inspire younger generations and community partners to connect with local food.
  * Be a valuable part of the Square Roots team and be surrounded by leaders in the local food movement both in Square Roots and the greater New York City area

Typical candidates are in their early twenty and are serious about a career in local food. Most applicants have no previous experience in the industry but are hard working and passionate about contributing to the future of food. Graduates from the program have gone on to join Square Roots, start their own urban farming businesses, and landed jobs at high tech indoor farming companies.

In short, the program is proving to be a robust pathway to a future of leadership in the urban farming industry.

Our next programs starts on November 1.Applications will officially open on July 24th (and that will be accompanied by a big PR push). We had over 500 applications for our first program, but we want to give folks from your network a “head start” on the process. If you have anyone in mind you think would be excited about this opportunity, feel free to forward this email or point them towards

Do let me know if you have any questions. Or, as I said, feel free to forward this email - and we’ll do the rest!

Hope to hear from you soon
