This email is to serve as a reminder that the Department of Linguistics is pleased and prepared to offer foreign language proficiency exams to students who can demonstrate some mastery of a language other than English.

The Linguistics Department offers a Second Language Proficiency Exam for those languages not tested through the College of Humanities or other language-testing departments. We test for competence in Armenian, Hindi, Korean, Navajo, Polish, Somali, Swahili, Tagalog, Urdu, Vietnamese, Zulu, etc. In fact, we test for any language not taught at the UA or taught only through the Critical Languages Program.

Students who pass this exam are able to demonstrate at least four semesters worth of knowledge of the language they sign up for. (For those majors that require only two semesters of a foreign language, we will tailor the exam to test for second-semester proficiency.) With their foreign language requirement fulfilled by this exam, these students are free to explore other opportunities available at U of A.

In a society where immigration and multilingualism is becoming more prevalent, this Second Language Proficiency Exam has the potential to grow. I encourage you to take a look at the exam website (https://linguistics.arizona.edu/second-language-proficiency-exam) and to point those students who could pass such an exam to the right resources. Students are often surprised and excited by the notion that a language they grew up speaking can offer them more freedom at the university level. Students sign up online to meet with available representatives from the Department of Linguistics.

If you have any questions about the exam or the sign-up process, please email Marian Wiseley (mwiseley at email.arizona.edu<mailto:mwiseley at email.arizona.edu>). We thank you for your time and consideration and hope this opportunity helps enhance the university experience of your students.

All the best,
