Consider enrolling in this indispensable, hands-on laboratory course in plant sciences. This course fills free elective credit in both the Plant Sciences and Sustainable Plant Systems majors.
Name and number of the course: Principles of Plant Physiology lab (PLS 361)
Units: 1 (3 contact hours)
Meeting time: Wednesday between 1:00pm-4:00pm
Lab meeting place: Marley 212
Instructors: Ravi Palanivelu
Content: Students will perform a hypothesis-driven, inquiry-based approach to characterize and determine if unknown Arabidopsis mutants assigned to them are drought-tolerant. The lab exercises are primarily based on a clearly laid out 'detective manual' (from the Australian National University). Students will conduct their plant detective projects in groups of two to three students. The outcome is expected to teach students not only concepts of modern plant biology but also help gain skills in using various equipment and assays and to collect data and interpret the results. Each group will submit a report and do an oral presentation to their peers at the end of the semester.
