See below and attached for more information on this internship opportunity.
I am the Assistant Director of Horticulture at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona. I am the administrator for the Garden Club of America (GCA) annual Award in Desert Studies https://www.dbg.org/scholarships .This $4,000 annual award is in the form of a summer internship or research funding for advanced undergraduates as well as graduate students, to promote the study of horticulture, conservation and design in arid landscapes. The purpose is to give students an opportunity to apply their course study knowledge in a public garden setting while working with garden professionals at a public garden of their choice. This is the fifth year that I have helped administer the award, and the first four years have been tremendously successful for both the DBG and for the students. However, our challenge has been how to effectively get the word out that this opportunity exists, and can exist for students in public gardens other than the Desert Botanical Garden community. So far we have had the most success recruiting local students from our nearby university, but our hope is to make sure that this opportunity is available to any student interested in the study of horticulture, conservation and design in arid landscapes, not just the local students in Phoenix. I have identified your organization as a possible fit for student participation and would love to have your help in promoting this opportunity in connecting students and public gardens. I can tell you from experience that this is a wonderful opportunity to recruit emerging talent to your institution and I hope that you are interested. The key is to connect interested students with public gardens to create an internship opportunity. This requires the pairing up of a university with a public garden in proximity to one another. If your institution or garden already have these connections then simply making the parties aware of this opportunity is what I am asking for your assistance with.
The deadline for student applications this year is January 15, 2017, so I am hoping that you can get back with me as soon as possible so that we can work together to generate interest for this year. Please feel free to forward this information to other interested gardens, universities, or students. If there is a more appropriate person to contact within your organization please let me know. Establishing these contacts this year will help me, as well as your garden, to ensure that this award gets the attention that it needs now and for the future. Additional information is enclosed.
I look forward to hearing back from you and welcome any and all questions
