The Biodiversity Group in Tucson is seeking student workers interested in science education. Work coincides with the academic semester (commencing soon). Please see the attached posting for more information.
Please have seriously interested students contact me ASAP directly via e-mail: jobowman at biodiversitygroup.org<mailto:jobowman at biodiversitygroup.org> or call me and leave a message and contact number at 520-904-2364. Ideally, we will want to meet with and prepare student volunteers by mid-September when teachers begin the lessons with which they’ll need most assistance.
Again, here is exactly what we need from and have to offer student volunteers:
Starting as early as September 1st and lasting up until winter break, Summer and I will have between 8 – 12 local teachers of 3rd – 6th graders who will be trying out the 7 core lessons of our Biodiversity PEEK STEAM curriculum (flier attached). We can make wonderful use of and give an engaging practicum experience to UofA student volunteers who can work with the teachers to assist them with two of the lessons in particular, but more as desired! The two lessons that will be most important to have some student assistance are:
1. Going outside to take data-worthy and artistic photos of wild plants and animals, and
2. Selecting and uploading their chosen photos to the Biodiversity PEEK project on iNaturalist.
Again, loads more opportunities to help than just that… but that’s the minimum commitment we need regarding school/site visits.
Before working with the teachers, we would want to meet with student volunteers for a 2 hour workshop on Biodiversity PEEK STEAM.
We need volunteers to have their own transportation to and from the school(s)… (Paul will need to chime in on the do-ability of small travel stipends if needed)
And, once introduced, we need volunteers to communicate with the teachers themselves as to planning their visits.
We can make use of one student intern without overwhelming them by having them assist just the 2-3 teachers who need more assistance due to their low comfort level with going outside to learn, use cameras, and iNaturalist. We can use up to four student interns but we need any and all of them to be takers of initiative.
Thanks so much for the help… I do so hope to hear from some students this month and look forward to working with them!
