Consider enrolling in ENTO 417/517 Insect Systematics this Fall!
This course is a four-unit lecture/lab course is offered at both the graduate and undergraduate level, cross listed as ECOL 417/517 and EIS 417/517
See the attached flyer for more details.
By the end of the course students should be able to:
* Label a generalized hexapod diagram with external anatomy terms.
* Name and sight-identify all hexapod orders and common local families.
* Teach others to collect, preserve, and curate hexapod specimens and describe why this process is important.
* Describe how species and other taxa are named and described.
* Teach others how to read a phylogenetic tree, what kinds of data are used to estimate trees, how those data are analyzed, and what it means to be monophyletic.
* Draw a phylogenetic tree of relationships between hexapod orders.
* Describe key innovations and life history strategies of major hexapod lineages
* Teach others how to use an identification key and other methods of insect identification.
* Name and briefly describe recent developments in insect biodiversity research, e.g., biodiversity informatics, DNA barcoding, ancient DNA, Next Gen Sequencing.
* Describe how and why hexapods inform us about biodiversity and influence our conservation decisions.
* Teach others the importance of voucher specimens in biological sciences.
* Teach others why the field of systematics is important.
