Dear Colleagues, 
The Smithsonian Gardens (SG) designs, manages, and maintains the gardens and
grounds of the many Smithsonian museums in Washington, D.C., which attract
over twenty million visitors each year.  SG also develops horticulture
displays and exhibitions for exterior and interior museum spaces.  

 

SG is currently accepting applications for the Orchid Collection Internship
through January 5, 2014.  We'd appreciate if you could forward this
information to any students who may be interested an internships with
Smithsonian Gardens!   

 

Smithsonian Orchid Collection Internship Project Description
Exhibition preparation, digital image cataloguing and species data source
citation

 

This internship will give the student the opportunity to experience various
aspects of living collection management through working with the Smithsonian
Orchid Collection (SOC) managed by Smithsonian Gardens.  This internship
will offer the opportunity to promote an understanding of weekly exhibition
preparation, processing born digital images into a digital asset management
system (DAMS) and creating data source citations. The intern works under the
supervision of the Manager, Greenhouse Nursery Operations Branch.

 

The primary focus of the internship will involve preparing collection plants
for weekly exhibition deliveries including inventorying selected plants,
preparing weekly delivery lists and pulling/generating display labels.

 

Additional areas of focus of this internship include preparing digital
orchid images for Smithsonian Institutions' digital asset management system,
embedding metadata, descriptive cataloging of images in the DAMS system.
Additionally creating and updating data source citations in the living
collections database, BG-BASE. This project will involve a thorough review
of SOC's current species accessions by verification of orchid nomenclature.

 

This internship is designed to meet the needs of a student who is interested
in public gardens administration, is seeking experience in living plant
collections, and is interested in enhancing their plant identification
and/or collection records techniques. Interns are encouraged to take
advantage of the abundant resources of the Smithsonian Institution.

 

Internship Details

. Open to all current undergraduate and graduate students who study
horticulture or a related discipline and wish to further their knowledge
through practical hands-on work experience

. Ten to sixteen week long internships / 40 hours per week

. The duty location of this internship is primarily at the Greenhouse
Facility in Suitland, Maryland. To learn more about the Greenhouse Facility,
