Undergrad Research Positions Available (3) in Plant Ecology Lab
I am an EEB PhD student looking for 3 responsible and meticulous
undergraduate students to do lab work 9 hrs/week in Fall 2011 semester.
These students would be eligible to earn 3 units of research credit during
the fall. The students will gather data on plant traits, more specifically
on leaf stoichiometry and wood anatomy of trees.
My research seeks to define plant ecological strategies; I explores how
trees coordinate their roots, wood and leaf traits to be adapted to their
environment. I need help processing twig and leaf samples from 25 deciduous
tree species from the Northeast temperate forest.
The students will be taught and be responsible for grinding leaves, running
leaf phosphorus content analyzes and taking wood anatomical measurements on
twig cross-sectional slices. I am looking for reliable, meticulous and
responsible students interested in learning about ecology, research and
plants.
In addition to the 3 research units, some benefits of participating in this
project include gaining experience utilizing basic wet lab equipment, being
exposed to the current research in plant ecology, learning about the
ecological significance of plant traits and to taking part in the life of
our lab. Our lab, which studies plant physiology and plant community ecology
have weekly lab meetings which the students are welcome to attend.
