A great new class to consider FALL 2011for Plant Science majors meeting the
pre-requisites!
PLS 359-Plant Cell Structure and Function*
This course will first cover molecular and subcellular organization of a
single plant cell. Subsequently, tissue levels of organization and function
will be discussed. Emphasis will be placed on the structural aspects as well
as the functions of plant cells, tissues and organs. Finally, the course
will teach structural responses of plants to diseases, pests and mechanical
injury and on topics related to economic and applied plant anatomy.
MEETING TIME:
MWF, 12:00-12:50PM
*This course replaces PLS450 Plant Anatomy (required for the PLS major).
It serves as excellent preparation for PLS 360/361 Plant Physiology which
will be taught Spring 2012.
COURSE OBJECTIVES AND EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Students will:
. Understand the plant cell and organelle structure.
. Learn anatomical descriptions of plant tissues and organs.
. Recognize the complexity and structural organization within higher
plants.
. Be able to describe the functions of plant cell organelles,
tissues, and organs.
. Understand plant structural responses to interactions with
microorganisms and pests.
. Recognize the economic impact of applied plant anatomy.
