Students needing or wanting to take MCB 181R and 181L (Introductory Biology
I) in the Spring 2011 semester should consider taking our new course:
MCB 184
Introductory Biology I: The Secrets of Life
4 units (5 units for honors)
Instructor: Dr. Bruce Patterson
This course combines the content taught in both the lecture and the lab into
a cohesive 4-unit course, and will satisfy the MCB 181R and 181L
requirements set for any major!
Course Description: Integrated lecture and laboratory course. Introduction
to the machinery and communication of cells. Genetic code, synthesis and
function of proteins, basic genetics, gene regulation,
intra-and-inter-cellular communication. Scientific method, experimental
design and analysis. Honors section available for 5 units. Students may
only receive credit for either MCB 184 or the combination of MCB 181R and
181L.

To register for MCB 184, students may simply use UAccess.
Students needing to only take the lecture portion of the course may register
for MCB 181R, which will also be taught in Spring 2011. MCB 181L (the lab)
is currently slated to be taught only during the fall semesters.
