School Garden Internship
Spring 2011
A school garden is an innovative and powerful educational tool. It enables
educators to provide students with an understanding of the physical dynamics
of local ecologies, nutrition, the culture and politics of food, and
practical life skills not limited to horticulture. You will be trained by
the Community Food Bank Food Resource Center School Gardening Program and
supervised by a field coordinator and faculty member to assist a Tucson
school with a garden and gardening education. You will be eligible for
course credit that can range from 2-6 units.* Interns work directly with
teachers and students at a range of schools across the city.
Since credits are variable and enrollment is limited, the School of
Geography and Development's Program Coordinator will register you for the
course. You must contact the instructor of the course, Sallie Marston at
<mailto:marston at email.arizona.edu> marston at email.arizona.edu , if you would
like to be considered for enrollment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
. Collaborate with garden team at the school to assist the garden
program
. Support the installation of a garden at the school site
. Assist in maintaining the school garden--watering, planting,
weeding, etc.
. Develop garden based lessons in collaboration with teachers
USEFUL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
. Experience in vegetable gardening
. Interest in food system issues and benefits of growing food
. Commitment to the well-being and health of children and youth
. Ability to work effectively with little supervision
. Bilingual English / Spanish (helpful)
REQUIREMENTS:
. Able to obtain Arizona Department of Public Safety fingerprint
clearance card
. Ability to work with teachers, children, and youth respectfully
and with patience
* Each 1 unit of credit represents 50 hours a semester of involvement which
translates into about 3 hours of internship per week. The internship
includes the opportunity to engage with students, teachers and the school
garden according to your own schedule. There are additional in-class
meetings around garden related readings and field trips. A two semester
commitment would be ideal, but is not required.
