</i></span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; color: rgb(33, 33, 33);"><i>Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is both nutritionally valuable for a healthy diet and economically crucial for the U.S. agricultural industry, particularly in Arizona. As a
widely accepted vegetable, lettuce is an important agricultural model organism for studying plant genetics, disease resistance, and other agricultural characteristics, thanks in part to its relatively simple genome. In parallel, it is emerging as a useful
model system for understanding the relevance of plant microbiomes to nutrition, especially as the microbes that occur within lettuce leaves are regularly consumed. Such microbes (endophytes) that live within healthy leaves and roots can influence plant responses
to stress, including saline soils, water limitation, heat, and biotic stressors, but the microbiomes of arid-grown lettuce have not been studied in detail. In this study, we leveraged an existing common garden of 12 lettuce genotypes grown under the field
scanalyzer at Maricopa Agriculture Center, in collaboration with the Pauli lab and colleagues at UC Davis, to explore how microbial communities vary among lettuce genotypes and with respect to desirable phenotypic traits. I will show how the diverse lettuce
microbiome varies with leaf nutrients and root traits and highlight future studies that will explore regional variation in lettuce microbes and connections between these plant microbiomes and the human gut microbiome, key elements for health.</i></span></p>
