<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman",serif">Research on epigenetic modifications of the genome has exploded in the past decade with the realization that these modifications are central to understanding gene expression
and regulation. Yet, the implications of these advances for evolutionary biology are still unclear. In this discussion-based seminar course, we will read recent papers in the field to understand the role epigenetic variation plays in development, gene expression,
transgenerational plasticity and adaptive evolution, drawing on recent studies from plants to humans. The course explicitly integrates discussion of evolutionary causation and the link between phenotype and genotype with findings in the field of epigenetics
to encourage students to debate about if and how current discoveries change our understanding of adaptation and evolution. Students are responsible for researching a topic of choice within this field, writing a short perspective paper and leading a class discussion.
