"Microbes and microevolution of plants: linking host genomes to metagenomes”<br>
<br>
The microbial symbionts living near, on, or inside plant organs can have profound impacts on the health and productivity of their hosts. The forces shaping the composition and function of plant-associated microbiomes are currently poorly understood. My research
focuses on the effects of host genetic variation on microbiome composition, as well as the potential for microbe-driven feedbacks on host health and fitness in both wild and agricultural plants. First, I show that the influence of host genotype on the microbiomes
varies among environments and among plant organs, and that naturally-occurring variation in soil microbial communities influences flowering time in a wild perennial mustard. Second, I show how various breeding processes can alter leaf and rhizosphere microbiomes
in maize. Finally, I discuss how leveraging information about host evolutionary history can lead to insights about how microbiome composition translates into microbiome function. Ultimately, this approach links individual plant genes and genomic features
to microbial community ecology, and vice-versa.<o:p></o:p></p>
