Hello SPLS Grads,

I hope your semester is going well and you had a relaxing Spring Break. It is that time of the year to consider your schedule and discuss with your PI funding for the Fall 2023 semester. As a reminder, SPLS grads need to be enrolled in a minimum of 6 units to receive funding. If you are a first-year grad student, CALS requires you to be enrolled in a minimum of 9 units. Registration for Fall 2023 will begin on April 6, 2023, and more information regarding registration dates and deadlines can be found here: https://registrar.arizona.edu/dates-and-deadlines

Below is a timeline of events and guidelines to consider when speaking to your PI about funding.

The timeline:

  1. Students will have until 3/24 to communicate with their PI on their funding source for Fall 2023 (TA or RA).
  2. Students will communicate back to me if they will be funded on an RA position or if they will be requesting a TA position
  3. If you will be funded through an RA position, please provide me, or have your PI, provide me with the account number you will be funded from by 4/7.
  4. TA assignments will be plotted and approved by the DGS
  5. Offer letters will then be drafted and sent out to students by Lizeth Enriquez

With this email, I am announcing the official call to speak with your faculty!

Some guidelines:

  * Please consider that full graduate funding consists of 3 items: stipend, tuition, health insurance. When you are hired as a TA or an RA all three are covered.
  * If you will be funded by an RA, your faculty PI will need to provide you with an account number for your funding or work with the accounting team on your funding. This must be completed by 3/24.
  * If you will be funded by a TA, your faculty supervisor will be the DGS and you will need to complete all training and language requirements. You will need to sign up for a TA position and a form will be sent out to you with possible TA courses available to TA for in early April. For now, we just need to know if you plan to TA by 3/24.
  * This is meant to assist grad students in having these types of discussions- if you are having problems initiating a conversation, please reach out to me so that I can work with you.

Please be sure to advise on your TA/RA funding no later than 3/24.

Sincerely,

Amanda Armendariz, MSW
