Dear PLS family:

As you may have read, or deduced, I am planning to retire as Interim Director of the School. My last official day of employment is January 5, 2024. I have really enjoyed working for you in this position, and hope you have found my contributions helpful!

When I was asked to become Interim Director in September 2022, I agreed with the expectation that I should only serve for one year, until a permanent replacement could be found and employed. This reflects my observation that I am no spring chicken, having served at the UA since 1989! Put selfishly, it is now time for me to enjoy my retirement years. But for you, I think you need a leader that is about 20 years younger (i.e. me in 2000!).

I do, however, regret having to leave you at this point in the UA timeline that appears particularly challenging. Working with you has exposed me to the highly multiplexed problems associated with coordinating the individuals within a single unit, but having multiple personal interests and goals. Equally complex are the issues that now have to be handled above the level of the School.

I am confident that you, individually and collectively, are equal to the tasks that confront you, otherwise I would not step down. You have outstanding scientists in your ranks, and wonderful instructors. The incoming faculty and students are top-notch, as are those in our tenured ranks.

I wish you all the best for the future. I will always remain available for contact via email!

Sincerely yours,

David
