Title:
Image and cyber physical systems-based high throughput phenotyping aimed at crop improvement

Seminar link: https://arizona.zoom.us/j/88614287572 (Password: spls2023)

Abstract:
A wide gap exists between the successes achieved by the crop physiology community and the utilization of these by the crop breeding community. This has limited our progress towards achieving the desired levels of yield and quality enhancement in crops. Image and cyber physical systems-based high throughput phenotyping systems provides us an opportunity to tackle complex physiological traits and develop a breeding strategy for enhancing yield gains even under changing climate. My talk will deal with the following examples to highlight strategies to develop tools that can help efforts to breed varieties with high yield potential and climate resilience. Example 1 – Exploring stomatal dynamics in sorghum to develop water use efficient and high yielding sorghum hybrids, based on target population of environments and Example 2 – Developing high night temperature tolerant wheat cultivars using field-based heat tents integrated with cyber physical systems. I will also highlight ongoing work on addressing flower abortion and pod/boll drop in cotton and soybeans and finally an insight into designing panicle architecture in sorghum to enhance yield potential. Towards the end, I will provide my opinions on how to tackle difficult to phenotype traits and extending the technology to benefit the crop improvement programs.

Bio:
Krishna Jagadish SV is Professor and Thornton Distinguished Chair at Department of Plant and Soil Science, Lubbock, Texas, USA. He is also the Director of the Texas Coalition for Sustainable Integrated Systems Research Program (TeCSIS), Director of the Davis College Water Center, and Coordinator of the Texas Alliance for Water Conservation (TAWC).
Dr. Jagadish is a senior crop physiologist with more than 15 years of post-PhD research experience in public and academic institutions in Asia (IRRI - Philippines, TNAU and UAS - India) , Europe and North America (Kansas State University and Texas Tech University), with a passion to improve crop productivity, enhance genetic gains and resilience to harsh environmental conditions.
