Hello Graduate Students,
On January 12, 2007, at 7:51 a.m., the internationally acclaimed violinist Joshua Bell began playing his Stradivarius in the Washington D.C. Metro Station. The video<https://youtu.be/hnOPu0_YWhw> of this event is a little heart-stopping; as I watch, I know I would be one of those few who pause to listen. Ha. Who am I kidding? I am the one carrying the black handbag or wearing the red sweater, not even hearing the soaring music. The Washington Post organized the experiment and published a wonderful article<https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/pearls-before-breakfast-can-one-of-the-nations-great-musicians-cut-through-the-fog-of-a-dc-rush-hour-lets-find-out/2014/09/23/8a6d46da-4331-11e4-b47c-f5889e061e5f_story.html> about it. I think about the experiment occasionally as I run around on campus, focused on the next thing on my agenda. As part of the university, I can get into the UArizona Museum of Art for free, take advantage of the Stress-Busters free five-minute back massages, or rent a bike for free. No one can take advantage of every opportunity, and none of the opportunities below are Joshua Bell, but we invite you to pause and have a look at them. Maybe one will call your name.

Postdoctoral Opportunities
Experimental Psychology Society (EPS) Postdoctoral Grants for Study Visits
This scheme aims to help finance postgraduate and postdoctoral research in experimental psychology. Awards will pay for travel to and accommodation at another institution outside an individual’s academic base. The purpose of the visit is to develop the applicant’s research skills and may involve learning at first-hand about experimental procedures employed in the host laboratory or designing and running studies that cannot already be carried out in the applicant’s home department. Awards will not be granted for work which forms an integral part of an existing Ph.D research project, nor for work which would normally be funded by other bodies (e.g. the applicant’s award-granting body or home institution). To apply for an EPS Study Visit, you must be an EPS postgraduate member or a postdoctoral worker who received their PhD within the last five years. It is a further condition of the award that either the researcher’s home institution or the institution to be visited, or both, must be in the UK. Preference will be given to applicants supervised by an EPS member, or whose visit involves a project with an EPS member. Grants will be for a maximum of £3,500 to any individual. In addition, the Society will, on receipt of appropriate invoices, reimburse the institution visited by the student for actual costs incurred as a consequence of the visit up to a maximum of £100.
* Deadline: June 1; September 1; December 1; March 1
* Citizenship: Unrestricted

Helen Hay Whitney Foundation (HHWF) Postdoctoral Research in Biomedical Sciences
The Helen Hay Whitney Foundation (HHWF) supports early postdoctoral research training in all basic biomedical sciences. To attain its ultimate goal of increasing the number of imaginative, well-trained and dedicated medical scientists, the Foundation grants financial support of sufficient duration to help further the careers of young men and women engaged in biological or medical research. Candidates who hold, or are in the final stages of obtaining a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree and are seeking beginning postdoctoral training in basic biomedical research are eligible to apply for a fellowship. The Foundation accepts applications from candidates who have no more than one year of postdoctoral research experience at the time of the deadline for submitting the application, and who have received a PhD (or D.Phil. or equivalent) degree no more than two years before the deadline, or an M.D. degree no more than three years before the deadline. Since the number of available fellowships is limited, the Foundation does not make more than one award per year for training with a given supervisor. It also does not support more than two fellows per laboratory at one time.
* Deadline: June 15, 2023
* Citizenship: International students may apply but “foreign students will need to obtain appropriate visa documentation”

Huntington's Disease Society of America (HDSA) HD Human Biology Project
The Human Biology Project was launched in 2013 with the goal of fostering innovative research in collaboration with HD clinics to better understand the biology of Huntington’s disease as it occurs in humans. HDSA encourages researchers to consider one of HDSA’s 54 Centers of Excellence as a potential collaborator, but applicants may propose to work with any HD clinic around the world. One to two years of funding will be provided to support a scientist working collaboratively with an HD clinic anywhere in the world. Awards up to $75,000/year ($50,000 salary support and $25,000 research budget) will be granted. Preference will be given to young postdoctoral and clinical investigators (PhD and/or MDs) who are not yet independent.

Morton Cure Paralysis Fund (MCPF) Research Grants
The Morton Cure Paralysis Fund (MCPF) is committed to developing effective therapies (cures) for paralysis associated with spinal cord injury and other disorders of the central nervous system (CNS). MCPF funds activities that hold promise of identifying therapies (cures) for paralysis in humans. MCPF has particular focus of placing projects in the research pipeline, that is, enabling scientists to develop the proof concept data necessary to apply for larger NIH grants. The development of effective therapies for chronic injury is a high priority for the organization. Basic research will be supported if it has clear potential to accelerate progress at the applied end of the continuum and/or if it reflects innovative research or a ‘change of direction.’ Most research awards range from $5,000 to $75,000 and are based on one-year contracts. A second year may be considered contingent upon the grantee submitting a six-month progress report, a 12-month progress report and a continuation application that is favorably reviewed by MCPF’s Grant Committee. Either senior scientists or postdoctoral fellows may serve as principal investigators. If the latter, the applicant must submit a letter of support from the laboratory’s senior scientist, as well as two other appropriate letters of reference.
* Deadline: April 30; October 31
* Citizenship: Unrestricted

Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research Post-Ph.D. Research Grants
Post-Ph.D. Research Grants are awarded to individuals holding a Ph.D. or equivalent degree to support individual research projects. The program contributes to the Foundation's overall mission to support basic research in anthropology and to ensure that the discipline continues to be a source of vibrant and significant work that furthers our understanding of humanity's cultural and biological origins, development, and variation. The Foundation supports research that demonstrates a clear link to anthropological theory and debates, and promises to make a solid contribution to advancing these ideas. There is no preference for any methodology, research location, or subfield. The Foundation particularly welcomes proposals that employ a comparative perspective, can generate innovative approaches or ideas, and/or integrate two or more subfields.
