Welcome to The Graduate Center Newsletter
Every semester, we send two newsletters to the graduate community at the University of Arizona. Each section below contains a link to a full article with resources, opportunities, and stories about graduate students.

[Andrew Carnie, Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate College]
Message from the Dean

Hello graduate students, faculty, staff, and friends.

As we now transition into the third year of the pandemic, I was thinking about a message I sent in an earlier newsletter near the beginning of the outbreak. One of the things I tried to highlight was how, despite the stresses and traumas being inflicted on us, we as a community of scholars were developing new ways to support each other and express our resiliency. I think now at this stage, I can comment again on this. While we must acknowledge much tragic loss and mourn with our families and friends over those who have passed or who are continuing to suffer the consequences of long COVD, and despite the fact that we have seen a second pandemic of misinformation and fear-mongering, I think there continues to be evidence of hope, compassion, and community that particularly emerges from the community of graduate scholars, their faculty, and the other people who support them. In this issue, you will find articles about students who embody these ideas.

If you won’t mind indulging a proud Dean, I’d also like to mention some ways the Graduate College has been working on your behalf. In a previous issue, I highlighted the special struggles that our students of color have to face when they come to Graduate School. Frans Tax and his team in our office of equity and inclusion have been focusing on the fact that our failure to retain students of color and help them achieve our degree goals was out of sync with our successes in recruitment. This has led to a number of important initiatives, including the creation of a mentoring institute in collaboration with our colleagues in Faculty Affairs, to help develop better practices of inclusive mentoring. Our DEI office has also been working directly with students to develop support communities and opportunities to provide important feedback. In recognition of the fact that more and more master’s level education is becoming critical to our state and nation, Associate Dean Maggie Pitts launched a project, funded by the Office of Strategic Initiatives, to completely rethink our approach to master’s level education. This 21st century master’s project recognizes the important role that masters education plays for students of color, first generation graduate students and veterans and looks at ways to make it more accessible for people who have to work. Great work continues also in the Graduate Center, headed by Meg Lota Brown, David Bradshaw, and their team. They have new offerings to support graduate student writing and a brand new set of tools and support for doctoral students searching for careers outside of academia. Finally, I’d like to mention two new important news items for those students who are teaching or research assistants. This coming fall for the first time, we will have a minimum stipend level. This is to reflect the skyrocketing costs that face our graduate students and the fact that we need to respect the skills and knowledge they bring to their position. This minimum stipend level is going to be tied to the cost-of-attendance number that is determined annually by the US State department for international students at our institution. So we can expect that it will increase each year and that wages for GAs will no longer stagnate. Second, I’m pleased to announce that the President’s new program for employee parental leave extends to graduate employees too. Since many graduate students are of the age where they are starting families, this will be of considerable importance to our student body.

Thank you for indulging me for a bit of horn-tooting. I’m hoping our small contributions will make the lives of our incredible graduate student scholars easier so that they might pursue their passions and change the world.
