Graduate seminar for Fall 2021  (ECOL 596W)

Course title: Macroecology, macroevolution, and speciation

Credit hours:  2

Meeting:  Once per week, for 1:20 minutes

Instructor:  John J. Wiens

Goal:  The first half of the class will introduce students to diverse areas of macroecology, macroevolution, and speciation. The second half will focus on a particular topic in these areas, to be selected by the students. Macroecological topics will include species diversity gradients, geographic range sizes, community assembly, and ecological niches.  Macroevolutionary topics will include adaptive radiation and diversification.  Topics in speciation will include ecological speciation and speciation genomics.

Course format:  The course will emphasize exploring, reading, and discussing the essential primary literature on these topics.

Time and place:  TBA, based on an organizational meeting with students who sign up for the class, during the first week of classes.

Target audience: Ph.D. and Master’s students in EEB and related areas.
