Dear Directors of Graduate Studies and Graduate Program Coordinators:

FYI—This communication from the Graduate College went out to all Research Assistants and Associates.

--------------------------

Dear Graduate Student Research Associates and Assistants,

(A separate message to Teaching Assistants/Associates about supporting remote instruction will be coming soon from Associate Dean Maggie Pitts)

Thank you for all the hard work you do to advance the research mission of the University! You may be having questions about how to conduct your work given recent changes in University operations during COVID-19. I am writing to offer some guidance about mitigation.

1. Please review the official guidance from the University at https://www.arizona.edu/coronavirus-covid-19-information. Please pay attention to the memos from VP for Research Betsy Cantwell, from the Provost and from the President. We also recommend that you review guidance from the CDC (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html) about protecting yourself and our community.

2. Please discuss (by phone or Skype if appropriate) with your faculty supervisor what accommodations and adjustments should be made to your work responsibilities in light of the current situation. Specifically:

  1. Changes to anything you have to do with the public, especially with vulnerable and at-risk populations.
  2. Changes that will protect the safety of yourself and your coworkers.
  3. Changes to travel plans for research and conference presentations.

3. If you have been awarded a research or travel grant from GPSC please contact them directly if the travel or research is no longer possible.

4. If you require further assistance with accommodations, you should request advice from your director of Graduate Studies, department head, or to the Graduate College. At the Graduate college you may contact either associate dean Maggie Pitts (mjpitts at arizona.edu<mailto:mjpitts at arizona.edu>) or Dorian Voorhees (voorhees at arizona.edu<mailto:voorhees at arizona.edu>).

5. Please read the attached memo below from SVPR Cantwell and Provost Folks that was sent to faculty and staff. This equally applies to you as an RA and student researcher.
Sincerely,
[cid:part5.52255F26.BF6046D6 at email.arizona.edu]

Dear Arizona Faculty and Staff,

Please forgive the series of emails this evening – there are many issues to address, as you can imagine.

We are writing to update you on campus plans to sustain our research activities through the COVID-19 mitigation activities.

Until further notice, normal research activities will continue with accommodations as needed for impacted human subjects-related work, laboratories and animal care. Please contact your Associate Dean for Research (ADR) toreport specific impacts to your research program.

We are particularly concerned to provide suitable accommodations for all faculty and staff who may be at risk of serious illness from COVID-19 (see CDC guidance here<mailto:https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/specific-groups/high-risk-complications.html>). If you feel the need to work remotely to stay safe, and this will necessitate interim supports to sustain your research work, please communicate swiftly with your direct supervisor to develop an appropriate plan.

Research Operations will coordinate with federal sponsors and ADR’s to communicate further guidance through the research gateway (https://rgw.arizona.edu<https://rgw.arizona.edu/> ), and through the University’s COVID-19 website (https://www.arizona.edu/coronavirus-covid-19-information).

RII is establishing a working group of university research experts in Coronavirus-related areas to plan for future proposal opportunities that will arise from this crisis.

We deeply appreciate your creativity and flexibility as we adapt quickly to these rapidly changing circumstances.

Regards,

Betsy Cantwell
Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation
