DAAD – German Academic Exchange Service Study Scholarship and Research Fellowship Information Session
DAAD Fellowships provide support for study in Germany. The following opportunities through DAAD are generally most relevant for graduate students: study scholarships (provide an opportunity to do independent study in Germany or to complete a full Master's degree), research grants (primarily to do doctoral research). As a partner university, DAAD encourages the UA to select one priority candidate. Priority candidates from partner universities receive preferential status in the general fellowship competitions and have a considerably higher likelihood of being selected. The information session will cover the basics of the study scholarship and research scholarships as well as the priority candidacy process.

American Educational Research Association (AERA) Dissertation Grants  With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), the AERA Grants Program announces its Dissertation Grants competition. The aim of the program is to advance fundamental knowledge of relevance to STEM policy, foster significant science using education data, and build research capacity in education and learning. The program seeks to stimulate research on U.S. education issues using data from the large-scale, national and international data sets supported by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), NSF, and other federal agencies, and to increase the number of education researchers using these data sets. The program supports research projects that are quantitative in nature, include the analysis of existing data from NCES, NSF or other federal agencies, and have U.S. education policy relevance.

Arizona Financial Aid Trust (AFAT) Graduate Needs-based Awards
The Graduate and Professional Student Council (GPSC) has long advocated for better resources and funding for graduate students. This year we achieved a major win by securing AFAT—Arizona Financial Aid Trust—funding for graduate students. The award amount is $3,000, and there is $800,000 of total funding available. The application cycle runs from January 8 through July 1. Eligibility criteria includes: U.S. citizen/permanent resident; completed FAFSA (priority deadline: March 1); demonstrate financial need; minimum 3.00 GPA; includes Law and Medicine but NOT online students. To apply, (1) Log in Arizona Scholarship Universe; (2) Search AFAT in top-right search bar; and (3) Click “Apply” and follow the instructions.

DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) Short Term Research Grants Short-Term Research Grants are awarded for 1-6 months to highly qualified candidates who have completed a Master’s degree or Diploma, or in exceptional cases a Bachelor’s degree at the latest by the time they begin their grant supported research, or those who have already completed a PhD (postdocs). DAAD will cover health insurance and provide a flat rate subsidy for travel costs. In addition, limited funds are available for a rent subsidy and family allowance.

The Dwight David Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship Program (DDETFP) awards fellowships to students pursuing degrees in transportation-related disciplines (see link to PDF/HTML on website for list of degrees). Graduate & Professional Student Council (GPSC) Professional Opportunities Development (POD) Funding
The GPSC recognizes that graduate and professional student education is advanced by events promoting the development of skills necessary to succeed in their fields of study. Therefore, the GPSC strives to support professional development initiatives of graduate and professional students through Professional Opportunity Development (POD) Funding. Such initiatives and events include, but are not necessarily limited to, academic seminars, conferences, meetings with industry representatives, etc. which are occurring at the University of Arizona. Any group of at least three graduate and/or professional students can apply to the GPSC for funding to support a POD event they are directly involved in planning. Grand Canyon Historical Society Research Scholarship
The Grand Canyon Historical Society is a non-profit organization operating to develop and promote appreciation, understanding and education of the earlier history of the inhabitants and important events of the Grand Canyon and surrounding area; and to lawfully do any and all things necessary, suitable and proper for the accomplishment of these purposes. Through generous donations from our Members, the Society awards a $1,500 scholarship for support of research involving history, historic or environmental preservation in the Grand Canyon region. Eligible projects include any work that results in original research concerning historical individuals, events, sites, organizations, businesses or environmental issues in the Grand Canyon region; or any work that results in original research that supports or leads to historical preservation of any historical site, photographs, documents, or diaries with origins in the Grand Canyon region.

Immigrants Rising Graduate Scholarships
Founded in 2006, Immigrants Rising transforms individuals and fuels broader changes. With resources and support, undocumented young people are able to get an education, pursue careers, and build a brighter future for themselves and their community. Japanese Association of University Women (JAUW) International Fellowship Program
The Japanese Association of University Women (JAUW) announces the availability of fellowships for women who are carrying out or would like to carry out independent research or advanced study at the postgraduate level in Japan. Applicants must have received a Master’s degree or its equivalent and/or be in the pre-doctoral or dissertation level of a PhD program. Applicants must have an acceptance letter from a host institution in Japan.

Laura Bassi Scholarships
The Laura Bassi Scholarship was established by Editing Press in 2018 with the aim of providing editorial assistance to postgraduates and junior academics whose research focuses on neglected topics of study, broadly construed, within their disciplines. The scholarships are open to every discipline and are awarded three times per year: December, April, and August. The value of the scholarships are remitted through editorial assistance as follows: Master’s candidates: $750; Doctoral candidates: $2,500; Junior academics: $500. These figures reflect the upper bracket of costs of editorial assistance for master’s theses, doctoral dissertations, and academic journal articles, respectively. All currently enrolled master’s and doctoral candidates are eligible to apply, as are academics in the first five years of their employment.

NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising Research Support Grant for Academic Advising
NACADA research support is intended to facilitate research related to academic advising. Quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methodologies are welcome, as is research from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. Program assessment is not funded.  Successful proposals will clearly describe the development, implementation, analysis, and reporting of rigorous inquiry that investigates academic advising’s impact, context, or theoretical basis. The impact of academic advising on students and institutions, such as measurement of advising’s impact on particular student populations or on institutional goals (such as retention or program implementation) or analysis of the impact of particular advising practices, models, or organizational structures on student learning and development. The context of academic advising, which may include examination of institutional and cultural conditions that have an impact on student academic decision-making, institutional support, or reward and recognition of advising. The theoretical basis of academic advising development and practice, including evaluation or analysis of advising-based theory from philosophical/theoretical perspectives informed by a variety of disciplines.

Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) Tucson/Alliance Fund Scholarship
This project is supported in part by funds from the LGBTQ+ Alliance Fund, a fund of the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona. We anticipate awarding several $1,000 joint scholarships to LGBTQ+ persons or an active straight ally to attend an institution of higher education. Applicants can be either a graduating high school senior, undergraduate student, or graduate student, and a resident of the Tucson Metropolitan area or Pima County, attending any college or university. The requirements for a PFLAG/Alliance Fund Scholarship are: (1) Must be a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender person, or an active straight ally; and (2) Must be accepted to an institution of higher education for the period for which the scholarship is requested. A complete application packet shall consist of: (1) The application (personal information page); (2) An essay detailing the applicant’s plan for higher education, activities within the community, what will this scholarship mean to you and your family financially, and why PFLAG Tucson should award a scholarship to you; (3) Two letters of recommendation (one must be from someone other than a family member); and (4) A copy of the student’s admission acceptance letter (if the applicant is a current student, an unofficial grade transcript). The essay should be between 300 and 800 words and detailed enough to describe the applicant and their situation to the committee. Any information that is provided will be used only in the scholarship selection process and will be kept in the strictest confidence.

Southern Arizona Environmental Management Society Graduate Scholarships
University of Arizona continuing undergraduate and graduate students in the Environmental, Health and Safety field may now apply for the SAEMS scholarship. This year, a total of $8,000 in scholarships will be awarded, including $2,500, $2,000 and $1,500 scholarships directly supported by the proceeds of SAEMS seminars and the recent inaugural Topgolf tournament, and two additional scholarships of $1,500 and $500 supported by the Terracon Foundation.

UA Office of Societal Impacts Get the Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs)
The new Office of Societal Impacts under Research, Innovation & Impact (RII) and Student Engagement and Career Development (SECD) are partnering to: (1) host a free introductory workshop on course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) as an approach to broadening access to undergraduate research (UR) for all fields, and (2) offer a paid opportunity for instructors to attend a CURE Training Institute and develop a CURE. This opportunity for University of Arizona instructors is funded by a Provost Investment Fund award. It provides initial incentives and training to support instructors in designing CUREs as one- or two-unit first-year seminar courses. A cohort of six selected teams will attend the University of Arizona CURE Training Institute in May or June 2020. During the Institute, participants will learn about and use evidence-based instructional strategies to develop plans, instructional materials, and assessment tools for integrating a research project into a one- or two-unit first-year seminar course. Funding of $7,000 for summer 2020 development of one- or two-unit CURE course for first-year students and implementation in fall 2020 or spring 2021. Six teams will be selected for the 2020 CURE Cohort. Instructors who are faculty, post-docs, graduate students, or staff can apply. Instructors may apply as a team and split the award.

UA Space Grant Graduate Fellowships
The UA/NASA Space Grant Program and nominating departments provide six graduate fellowships per year to exceptional graduate students interested in promoting the understanding of space-related research to the public and who are studying in space sciences/engineering, public policy, earth sciences, science education, and global change-related fields. Space Grant fellows are required to complete an educational outreach project as part of their fellowship. In keeping with National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program goals, Space Grant Fellows will develop a project that promotes the understanding of space-related research to the public. Successful applicants tend to establish a relationship with an organization or institution (i.e. a school, museum, park/forest, or an existing educational program) as they develop their outreach project proposal. It is essential that applicants identify an "educational outreach advisor" representing this organization or program who will provide an initial letter of support that indicates their willingness to cooperate with the applicant's proposal and help in evaluating the project during the fellowship period.

Boston Athenæum Short-Term Fellowships
The Boston Athenæum offers short-term fellowships to support the use of Athenæum collections for research, publication, curriculum and program development, or other creative projects. Scholars, graduate students, independent scholars, teaching faculty, and professionals in the humanities as well as teachers and librarians in secondary public, private, and parochial schools are eligible. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or foreign nationals holding the appropriate U.S. government documents. The Athenæum expects all fellows to share a bibliography of items studied here. All applicants to the Athenæum’s fellowships that include a stipend are under consideration for this fellowship. Every year there are more applicants than can be awarded stipends; this fellowship allows worthy applicants who are selected to enjoy full access to all reading rooms, stellar service, book borrowing privileges, etc.

Endangered Language Fund (ELF) Language Legacies Grant Program
The Endangered Language Fund provides grants for language documentation and revitalization, and for linguistic fieldwork. The work most likely to be funded is that which serves both the native community and the field of linguistics, although projects which have immediate applicability to one group and more distant applicability to the other will also be considered. Support for publication is a low priority, although it will be considered. Proposals can originate in any country. The language involved must be in danger of disappearing within a generation or two. Endangerment is a continuum, and the location on the continuum is one factor in our funding decisions.

International Literacy Association (ILA) Helen M. Robinson Doctoral Student Grant
This grant, established in memory of Helen M. Robinson, may be given annually to support a doctoral student in the early stages of his or her dissertation research. Because Dr. Robinson devoted much of her work to developing a better understanding of instructional interventions, the grant (US$1,200) will be used to support dissertation research in this area.

Mellon-Fronteridades Creative Scholars
The Mellon-Fronteridades Creative Scholars program seeks to expand interdisciplinary scholarship, service, and engagement with Arizona-Sonora border communities through the lens of the humanities, arts, and humanistic social sciences. This program offers a unique opportunity to amplify new voices in the border narrative and enrich public understanding of border life. Additionally, this program elevates research/projects that engage with the social and cultural resources and the complex challenges among marginalized communities in the borderlands (e.g., food security, job scarcity, migration, environmental challenges, public health, regional challenges, human security etc.). This program provides funding for students, postdoctoral scholars, professionals, artists, and local community members passionate about enriching understanding of the US-Mexico borderlands through community-based art or social justice projects (Cohort 1) or scholarly projects (Cohort 2).

National Museum of African American History and Culture Internships & Fellowships Mellon-Fronteridades Creative Scholars
Internships at the National Museum of African American History and Culture offer college and graduate students and recent graduates opportunities to work closely with professionals and scholars in the museum field. The museum provides a dynamic learning environment and access to supportive mentors that help interns reach their educational and professional goals. Interns can gain practical museum skills and program development experience in a variety of positions from education to collections to public relations. Internships will take place at the National Museum of African American History and Culture or the office space at Capital Gallery, 600 Maryland Avenue SW, accessible by Metro Yellow/Green & Blue/Orange/Silver Lines.

Phil Zwickler Memorial Research Grants for the Human Sexuality Collection
Cornell University Library's Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections (RMC) is accepting applications for the Phil Zwickler Memorial Research Grants, which provide financial assistance to scholars conducting research on sexuality. American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Jack E. Leisch Memorial National Graduate Fellowship

Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) Program
The Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research (GIAR) program has provided undergraduate and graduate students with valuable educational experiences since 1922. By encouraging close working relationships between students and mentors, the program promotes scientific excellence and achievement through hands-on learning. University of Arizona Southwest Climate Adaptation Science Center (SW CASC) Natural Resources Workforce Development (NRWD) Fellowship
The Southwest Climate Adaptation Science Center (SW CASC) Natural Resources Workforce Development (NRWD) Fellowship was developed to provide graduate students with opportunities for training and practice in developing use-inspired and actionable science to inform natural resource management decisions. CDC Epidemiology Elective Program (EEP)
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) seeks medical and veterinary students for the CDC Epidemiology Elective Program (EEP) to applied epidemiology, public health, and global health. Students learn by gaining hands-on experience and mentorship from CDC subject matter experts. This program offers assignments during 6- or 8-week rotation periods largely based at CDC in Atlanta, Georgia. Assignments may involve: conducting surveillance of a disease, injury, or other health condition; analyzing health data to identify new risk factors for disease; assisting CDC’s EIS officers and other public health professionals in the field to investigate an outbreak; and contributing to CDC publications and guidelines of major public health importance.

John and Polly Sparks Early Career Grant for Psychologists Investigating Serious Emotional Disturbance (SED)
The John and Polly Sparks Early Career Grant supports early career psychologists conducting research in the area of early intervention and treatment for serious emotional disturbance in children. The John and Polly Sparks Foundation partnered with American Psychological Foundation (APF) to empower early career psychologists to produce scientifically-based research and programs that could provide models for broad-based applications across the country. Marion L. Brittain Postdoctoral Fellowship in Composition, Business/Technical Communication, and Digital Pedagogy

National Endowment for the Humanities Mellon Fellowships for Digital Publication
Through NEH-Mellon Fellowships for Digital Publication, the National Endowment for the Humanities and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation jointly support individual scholars pursuing research projects that require digital expression and digital publication. To be eligible for this special opportunity, an applicant’s plans for digital publication must be essential to the project’s research goals. That is, the project must be conceived as digital because the nature of the research and the topics being addressed demand presentation beyond traditional print publication. Successful projects will likely incorporate visual, audio, and/or other multimedia materials or flexible reading pathways that could not be included in traditionally published books, as well as an active distribution plan.

The National Endowment for the Humanities, a federal agency in Washington, D.C., administers a fellowships program that provides financial support for individuals who wish to pursue scholarly research projects in the humanities. Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues (SPSSI) Graduate and Postdoctoral Grants-in-Aid Program
The SPSSI Committee on Grants-in-Aid (GIA) wishes to support scientific research in social problem areas related to the basic interests and goals of SPSSI and particularly those that are not likely to receive support from traditional sources. The Committee especially encourages proposals involving (a) unique and timely research opportunities, (b) underrepresented institutions, graduate students, and junior scholars, (c) volunteer research teams, and (d) actual, not pilot, projects. Funding up to $1000 is available for graduate student research.  In the case of graduate students, strong preference is given to applications from students at the dissertation stage of their career. Thrasher Research Fund Early Career Award Program
The Fund recognizes that young investigators may find it difficult to remain in pediatric research because of a lack of funding. Therefore, the purpose of this program is to encourage the development of medical research in child health by awarding small grants to new researchers, helping them gain a foothold in this important area. The goal is to fund applicants who will go on to be independent investigators. The Fund is open to a wide variety of research topics.
