Hello everyone,
Are you interested in learning more about teaching at the college level, working and communicating with adult learners, or exploring the scholarship of teaching and learning? Would you like to improve your knowledge and skills in these areas to help with a TA'ship, the job market, and your future? Consider taking college teaching courses or earning a Certificate in College Teaching (http://cct.oia.arizona.edu/)
Graduate-level courses are open to all postbaccalaureate graduate students, postdocs, faculty, and staff. These courses can be taken individually OR as part of the Certificate in College Teaching<http://cct.oia.arizona.edu/>.
Courses for Fall 2020:
IA 497a/597a: Becoming a Learning Researcher
(1 unit; offered Spring/Fall semesters)

This 1-credit face-to-face course will prepare students to observe and interpret student expressed ideas in collaborative learning environments. Students will learn how to communicate the results of their analysis to propose actions to improve student understanding. This course will include an introduction to basic principles of the learning sciences, observational methods, task design, formative assessment, and team communication. This course further provides an opportunity to share with and learn from Learning Researchers serving in a variety of contexts (online, lecture hall, collaborative learning space, etc.) and content areas. This course prepares students to fulfill the responsibilities of IA497/597B, the 'Learning Researcher Service' course, which may be taken after or concurrently with IA497/597A.
IA 497b/597b: Learning Researcher Service
(2 units; offered Spring/Fall semesters)

Students in this 2-credit course have selected to serve as a Learning Researcher with a course Lead Instructor who is implementing an Instructional-Teams approach in their collaborative learning environment. The service course may meet face-to-face or online. The Learning Researcher is one member of the Instructional Team working to improve student learning. They will be expected to communicate regularly with the individuals acting in other roles, most directly with the Lead Instructor, for whom they propose actions to improve student understanding based upon their observations and interpretation of student expressed ideas during the engagement with in-class instructional tasks. This course will require students to implement observational methods, evaluate task design, engage in formatively assessing student understanding, and engage in regular and productive team communication. These skills are introduced in IA497/597A, the 'Becoming a Learning Researcher' course. Students in this course are expected to communicate their analysis directly to the Lead Instructor for the course for which they serve.
IA 597d: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in College Teaching
(3 units; offered Fall semesters)
Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:00 am - 12:15 pm Live Online!
This workshop-style course focuses on the practical application of multidisciplinary research that informs diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education. Students will engage in dialogue about social justice and equity in higher education and practice evidence-based teaching strategies to improve learning and retention for all students at the college level. Personal and professional development opportunities are built into the course.

IA 697a: Learner-Centered Teaching
(2 units; offered Spring/Fall semesters)
Tuesdays 2:00 - 4:00 pm Live Online!
This course provides a foundation in learner-centered teaching, and includes scholarship of college-level teaching and learning, approaches course and lesson design, techniques to implement and assess active and collaborative learning, and development of reflective teaching practices. Appropriate for anyone interested in learning more about college-level teaching or adult education.
IA 697b: Technology in Teaching
(2 units; offered Fall semesters)
Wednesdays 4:00 - 5:50 pm Live Online! - Course is full; waitlist available
In this workshop course, students learn-by-doing how to use technology to assess, motivate, present, explain, communicate, organize, and evaluate. Topics include: learning management systems, visualization, lecture recording, student response systems, open educational resources, online courses, academic integrity, website design, slide design, flipped classrooms, accessibility, online social interactions, e-portfolios, learning analytics. Methods, philosophies, and evidence for effective, safe, ethical implementation of technology use are discussed. Full participation requires a laptop/desktop with a webcam and microphone and weekly access to a fast internet connection for 1-6 hours.
IA 697g: Universal Design: Accessible Learning Environments
(3 units; offered Fall semesters)
Fully online and asynchronous. $50 iCourse fee.
This fully online course provides a comprehensive review of the theory, strategies, and techniques used in instructional design processes that foster inclusive learning environments for all learners. The curriculum addresses characteristics of learners such as learning differences, preferences and 21st-century learning attributes, approaches for utilizing differentiated instruction, engagement and motivation techniques, classroom management tactics, and universal design strategies. Emphasis will be placed on critical review of the literature as practically applied to various learning environments and contexts in post-secondary education.
