The Graduate and Professional Student Council (GPSC) represents the nearly 10,000 graduate and professional students at the University of Arizona. GPSC was established in 1991 and works to address graduate and professional student needs through our grant programs, events, and partnerships with many units at the University of Arizona.

Positions

GPSC Executive Officers:

President
The GPSC President meets regularly with members of the University of Arizona Administration on behalf of GPSC. In addition, the President serves as the chair of the GPSC Executive Board, including (but not limited to): scheduling meeting times/space, organizing/distributing/posting of the agenda, communicating with the General Council, and maintaining order during the meetings.

Vice President
The GPSC Vice-President is responsible for ensuring the smooth operations of the GPSC. This includes organizing, monitoring, and reviewing the activities of all GPSC Members and Student employees.


GPSC Representatives:

The GPSC Council has representative seats in each college with Graduate/Professional student enrollment at the University of Arizona, plus three at-large representatives. Representatives attend meetings two times a month, participate in GPSC Events, and represent graduate/professional student needs on both internal GPSC committees and campus committees.

Spring 2019 Grant Information




An important update regarding the April Travel Grants round: The award period for the April 15th Travel Grants round has been extended to include travel occurring in July and August 2019. If you traveled or plan to travel in the current fiscal year or plan to travel in July or August, you are eligible to apply during the April 15th round! If you have questions regarding your eligibility, contact us at gpscfunding at email.arizona.edu<mailto:gpscfunding at email.arizona.edu>.

Only one more grants round is coming up this academic year: Apply for Travel, ReaP, and POD grants by April 15th! Please note that faculty statements of support are due at the same time as applications—which means you’ll want to get your proposals in early! * Please volunteer to judge for the GPSC Travel Grants, Research and Projects Grants, and Professional Opportunities Development Grants programs. No experience is necessary-- we'll provide all the training you need to accurately and fairly assess proposals.

Diversity in the Classroom Workshops








Reducing Unconscious Bias & Micro-Aggressions in the Classroom

Given increasingly diverse classrooms, how can faculty and instructors reduce unconscious bias and micro-aggressions? Unconscious bias is pervasive, with nearly all people displaying unintended biases towards certain groups. After a brief introduction to the research, we will consider strategies for addressing students’ unconscious biases and micro-aggressions and offer teaching and assessment strategies that reduce the impact of our own unconscious biases.

Student Success and Retention Innovation American historian, playwright and social activist, Howard Zinn, wrote, “Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people can transform the world.” The micro affirmations framework for student success contends that small acts, when multiplied by hundreds of people, can transform a school. Learn how microaffirmations inform students' sense of belonging and advance student success, retention, and degree completion.

Serving Our International Students: Perspectives on Different Classroom Expectations

Presenters: Veronika Williams and Tahnee Bucher Barbosa da Silva, English as a Second Language
We will explore the pedagogical and cultural implications of the fact that the University now has more international students than ever. This workshop will compare typical US classrooms to classrooms in other countries to help the audience understand the different approaches to education. Suggestions will be offered to bridge the gap between styles and build understanding between people to help classes run more smoothly. These suggestions also help address differences in personality and learning style.

•Upon successful attendance of

Science Citizenship: My Path from the Labto Washington, D.C., to Going Local
Frances Colón
Wednesday, April 3, 2019•Noon to 1 p.m.

Frances Colón and Jasperi Consulting provide science, environment and technology policy advice to higher education institutions and to state and national policy-makers. Colón will speak on the importance of scienti­c civic engagement, from international negotiations to neighborhood-level evidence-based decision-making. After completing her PhD in neuroscience in 1997 at Brandeis University,  Colón moved to Washington, D.C., to begin a career in federal science policy-making. For 10 years she represented the United States globally on topics ranging from climate change to the advancement of women scientists to the re-engagement of Cuba through science cooperation. She left the U.S. Department of State in 2017 to focus on in‑uencing
knowledge-based decision-making at the city and state level.


Colón is a 2018 New Voices Fellow of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and
Medicine. From 2012 to 2017 she was Deputy Science and Technology Adviser to the U.S.
Secretary of State, where she led the re-engagement of scienti­c collaboration with Cuba and
coordinated climate change policy for the Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas. She
has a BS in biology from the University of Puerto Rico, and is the founder of Cenadores PR, a
nonpro­t that facilitates collaboration between the Puerto Rican diaspora and civil society on the
island. In 2016, CNET named her one of the 20 most in‑uential Latinos in technology. She is an
alumna of the National Hispana Leadership Institute, the U.S.-Japan Leadership Program, and the
National Committee on U.S.-China Relations Young Leaders Forum.








WSIP Summer Graduate Writing Institute




At WSIP’s summer Graduate Writing
Institute, graduate students of various
disciplines work on a writing project
individually and collaboratively. Taught by WSIP faculty , this program helps graduate students complete research projects, articles for publication, conference presentations, grant proposals, theses, and dissertations.

DATES: June 3 - 21, 2019
LOCATION: Online or in person at University of Arizona

APPLICATION FEE: $20 application processing fee for all applicants (does not guarantee acceptance; application will not be considered without payment)

PROGRAM FEE:
•FREE for UA Graduate Students
•$470 for non-UA Graduate Students (due upon acceptance)
APPLICATIONS OPEN: February 2019

*Students may not attend for free in consecutive years; students who withdraw or are withdrawn from the GWI are not eligible to attend the following year.

Description: In this workshop, we will discuss how to write thoughtful and relevant interpretations of data and findings.

Purpose: To provide instructional support, discuss writing-related concerns about the dissertation process, and introduce strategies to facilitate writing. Participants should bring a short sample of their writing to workshop and be prepared to write and work collaboratively with peers from diverse disciplines. Pre-registration is requested. Workshops are free to attend.

This series is available in-person and on-line for ABD (All But Dissertated) students. ABD students will be given registration priority for in-person attendance. Non-ABD students and Post-docs are welcome to attend online. The link for online access will be emailed to registered participants.
