Mitigating Unconscious Bias Workshop

Monday, October 15, 12 PM to 1:30 PM: Mitigating Unconscious Bias Workshop: What
Graduate Students Can Do

The Graduate Center and the Office of Diversity and Inclusive Excellence are excited to announce an upcoming workshop, ‘Mitigating Unconscious Bias: What Graduate Students Can Do.’ The workshop is free of charge. Lunch is provided, and space is limited to 40 in-person participants. We will also have an option for people to attend remotely through Zoom. Please register online at: http://bit.ly/oct15unconsciousbias<https://arizona.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=af018f756d1ccbea4673d3677&id=bcef1fa0d1&e=f446cbb14c>. A full description of the workshop is provided below.

As a graduate student, you have multiple roles. Sometimes you’re the subordinate, while other times you are the lead. Navigating these situations can be challenging, and the impact of unconscious bias may make the outcomes more difficult or less effective. While unconscious bias is not intentionally malicious, it can certainly get in the way of our best efforts to promote and leverage the benefits of diversity as well as the impact of the work we do. This workshop will examine how unconscious bias can influence the workplace and classroom and how graduate students can respond. We will share research-based strategies for addressing unconscious biases and micro-aggressions, and we will explore strategies that reduce the impact of our own unconscious biases.

Office Hours with President Robbins

Students may access signing up for office hours by visiting the contact page on the Executive Office of the President’s website: https://president.arizona.edu/contact-us<https://arizona.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=af018f756d1ccbea4673d3677&id=2d12019378&e=f446cbb14c>

Student office hours are a way for the President to listen to students, their needs, and identify what values drive our students while being more accessible to the student body.

Due to the high interest, we are asking that students submit an online request to attend President Robbins’ Student Office Hours. Please note, you are required to provide a topic of discussion for President Robbins’ Office Hours. Any topic that would be better handled by another department will be referred to the unit best equipped to assist you. After review, requests for the President’s Office Hours are scheduled in the order in which they are received; you will receive a confirmation email outlining your scheduled time.

In order to ensure that as many students as possible have the opportunity to speak with the President, there are three time slots per date, with meetings running approximately fifteen minutes each. Students are welcome to attend individually or in groups up to three people. All members of group meetings must be present for your group to be considered “present.” You must be a current University of Arizona student to register for President Robbins’ Office Hours.

Meetings will take place on the second floor of Old Main, and attendees will be asked to check in with the reception desk in the Executive Office of the President. We understand that everyone’s time is valuable; please arrive ten minutes before your scheduled appointment. Should something unexpected come up and you are no longer able to make your scheduled time, please call Presidential Events at 520-626-4349 or presrsvp at email.arizona.edu<mailto:presrsvp at email.arizona.edu>.

Dissertation Work

I am conducting a research study for my PhD dissertation in Mathematics Education at Virginia Tech and I am inviting you to participate. For my project, I am interested in building an instrument to assess the extent to which doctoral students, i.e. future researchers, struggle with interpreting and reporting p-values in the context of independent research and peer review. Growing concern over the ability of practicing researchers to appropriately interpret and report statistical results has compelled journal editors and professional societies alike to take action in an effort to address and ameliorate the situation. In an effort to investigate whether the renewed attention to this issue has initiated a cycle of self-correction amongst the research community, the purpose of this research is to determine the extent to which future researchers are positioned to perpetuate this damaging pattern.
I am inviting you to participate in the field test for this instrument. The extent of your participation is that you complete the assessment and an exit questionnaire. This instrument will assess your ability to evaluate the research of others and to make decisions mimicking those that might arise in your own research. Part 1 of the assessment consists of TRUE/FALSE items based on p-value misinterpretations. In Part 2 of the assessment, you will be asked to read research vignettes and evaluate whether the researcher’s actions were valid or appropriate interpretations of p-values in context. The exit questionnaire will solicit your opinions regarding the usability of the instrument and will collect demographic data. The length of time for completion is different for everyone, but we estimate that it will require no more than 60 minutes. Please make every effort to complete all items.
Your participation is greatly appreciated; however, please note that participation is voluntary. You are free to withdraw from the study at any time or not complete all of the survey items. This survey is being advertised at R1 institutions nationwide. As an incentive for your participation, one participant at each institution, via raffle, will receive a digital giftcard of $10 to the merchant of their choice (Starbucks, Amazon, iTunes). Additionally, all participants will be entered into a larger drawing for one of seven digital gift cards valued at $50 (data collection will be terminated after 1 month or when 1150 completed responses have been recorded; probability of winning the large drawing are then no worse than 7/1150; probability of winning is 7/n where n is the number of responses not to exceed 1150). Participation is confidential. Should you have any questions about the study, you may contact me (rakeller at vt.edu<mailto:rakeller at vt.edu>) or Professor Driscoll (adriscoll at vt.edu<mailto:adriscoll at vt.edu>). If you have concerns about the study’s conduct or your rights as a research subject, or need to report a research-related injury or event, you may contact the VT Institutional Review Board (irb at vt.edu<mailto:irb at vt.edu>).
Thank you,
Rachel Keller
