General Fellowships

American Association of University Women Dissertation Fellowships
American Fellowships support women scholars completing doctoral dissertations, conducting postdoctoral research, or finishing research for publication. The purpose of the Dissertation Fellowship is to offset a scholar's living expenses while she completes her dissertation. The fellowship must be used for the final year of writing the dissertation.

American Philosophical Society Fellowships and Grants
The American Philosophical Society maintains nine grant or fellowship programs in a wide range of fields. The Franklin, Lewis and Clark, Lewis and Clark Astrobiology, Library Digital Humanities Fellowship, Library Fellowship, and Phillips programs award small grants ($1,000 to $6,000) for modest research purposes. The Daland, Library Long-Term Pre-Doctoral Fellowship, and Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowship programs award much larger amounts ($40,000 to $60,000) in highly selective competitions.

Boren Fellowships for International Study
Boren Fellowships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Boren Fellows represent a vital pool of highly motivated individuals who wish to work in the federal national security arena. In exchange for funding, Boren Fellows commit to working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation. Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program
The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.

  *   Azerbaijani, Bangla, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu: Beginning, advanced beginning, intermediate and advanced levels;

DAAD - Study and Research in Germany
Provides a variety of educational exchange scholarships Germany. The Research Grant is specifically for PhD students (and post-docs) wishing to pursue research in Germany. The Study Scholarship provides resources for independent study in Germany. The University of Arizona has been invited to nominate one graduate student for a DAAD Study Scholarship. FLAS Fellowships for Foreign Language Learning
The program funds centers around the country that provide fellowships to promote foreign language competencies. The UA is home to a FLAS program in the Center for Middle Eastern Studies (http://cmes.arizona.edu/FLAS ). Also, you may apply to programs at some other institutions as well. Programs are either for the academic year or the summer. Institutions compete every four years for the program. Awards for 2018-2022 will be announced any day.

Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowships
Through its Fellowship Programs, the Ford Foundation seeks to increase the diversity of the nation's college and university faculties by increasing their ethnic and racial diversity, to maximize the educational benefits of diversity, and to increase the number of professors who can and will use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. Ford Foundation Fellowship awards are offered at the Predoctoral, Dissertation and Postdoctoral levels.  Fellowships are awarded in a national competition. Awards are made to individuals who, in the judgment of the review panels, have demonstrated superior academic achievement, are committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level, show promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers, and are well prepared to use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. To be eligible for a Ford Foundation Fellowship award you must be a citizen of the United States, demonstrate evidence of superior academic achievement (such as grade point average, class rank, honors or other designations), and be committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level. Fulbright Scholarship for U.S. Students
Fulbright offers recent graduates opportunities for personal and professional development and international experience that fosters mutual understanding among nations through study and research abroad. Created to increase mutual understanding among nations through education and cultural exchanges. Students design their own projects, which may include: university coursework, library or field research, classes in a music or art school, independent projects in the social or life sciences, assistant teach English, a combination of these or other activities.

Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad
This program provides grants to colleges and universities to fund individual doctoral students who conduct research in other countries, in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of six to 12 months. Projects deepen research knowledge on and help the nation develop capability in areas of the world not generally included in U.S. curricula. Projects focusing on Western Europe are not supported. Margaret McNamara Educational Grants for Women from Developing Countries
For students from developing countries who are currently studying in the United States or Canada, the MMMF awards grants of approximately $12,000 each; grants are not renewable. The MMMF also typically invites the recipients to Washington DC to participate in a three day Awards Program organized in their honor.

National Institute of Justice Graduate Research Fellowship Program
The NIJ Ph.D. Graduate Research Fellowship program provides awards for research on crime, violence, and other criminal justice-related topics to accredited universities that support graduate study leading to research-based doctoral degrees. NIJ invests in doctoral education by supporting universities that sponsor students who demonstrate the potential to successfully complete doctoral degree programs in disciplines relevant to the mission of NIJ (i.e., social and behavioral sciences, and science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).

OAS Scholarships for Academic Studies for Study Abroad

Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans
The purpose of The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans is to provide opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished New Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields. Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships in Ethics and Religion
The Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships are designed to encourage original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences, and particularly to help Ph.D. candidates in these fields complete their dissertation work in a timely manner. In addition to topics in religious studies or in ethics (philosophical or religious), dissertations appropriate to the Newcombe Fellowship competition might explore the ethical implications of foreign policy, the values influencing political decisions, the moral codes of other cultures, and religious or ethical issues reflected in history or literature.

Henry Frank Guggenheim Dissertation Fellowships
These fellowships of $20,000 each are designed to contribute to the support of the doctoral candidate to enable him or her to complete the thesis in a timely manner and are only appropriate for students approaching the final year of their Ph.D. work. Questions that interest the foundation concern violence and aggression in relation to social change, intergroup conflict, war, terrorism, crime, and family relationships, among other subjects. Dissertations with no relevance to understanding human violence and aggression will not be supported. Priority will also be given to areas and methodologies not receiving adequate attention and support from other funding sources.

Getty Foundation Pre- and Postdoctoral Fellowships
Getty Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Fellowships are intended for emerging scholars to complete work on projects related to the Getty Research Institute's annual research theme. Recipients are in residence at the Getty Research Institute or Getty Villa, where they pursue research projects, complete their dissertations, or expand dissertation for publication. Fellows make use of the Getty collections, join in a weekly meeting devoted to the annual theme, and participate in the intellectual life of the Getty.

International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF)
The Mellon International Dissertation Research Fellowship (IDRF) offers nine to twelve months of support to graduate students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who are enrolled in PhD programs in the United States and conducting dissertation research on non-US topics. Eighty fellowships are awarded annually.  Fellowship amounts vary depending on the research plan, with a per-fellowship average of $20,000. The fellowship includes participation in an SSRC-funded interdisciplinary workshop upon the completion of IDRF-funded research.

Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowships
ACLS invites applications for the annual competition for the Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowships, which support a year of research and writing to help advanced graduate students in the humanities and related social sciences in the last year of Ph.D. dissertation writing. The program encourages timely completion of the Ph.D. Applicants must be prepared to complete their dissertations within the period of their fellowship tenure and no later than August 31, 2020. A grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation supports this program.

Mellon Fellowships for Dissertation Research in Original Sources
The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) is pleased to offer fellowships generously funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for dissertation research in the humanities or related social sciences in original sources. The purposes of this fellowship program are to: Help junior scholars in the humanities and related social science fields gain skill and creativity in developing knowledge from original sources; enable dissertation writers to do research wherever relevant sources may be, rather than just where financial support is available; encourage more extensive and innovative uses of original sources in libraries, archives, museums, historical societies, and related repositories in the U.S. and abroad; and provide insight from the viewpoint of doctoral candidates into how scholarly resources can be developed for access most helpfully in the future.
The program offers about fifteen competitively awarded fellowships a year. Each provides a stipend of $2,000 per month for periods ranging from 9-12 months.

NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship Program
The Dissertation Fellowship Program seeks to encourage a new generation of scholars from a wide range of disciplines and professional fields to undertake research relevant to the improvement of education. These $27,500 fellowships support individuals whose dissertations show potential for bringing fresh and constructive perspectives to the history, theory, analysis, or practice of formal or informal education anywhere in the world.

African Women in Agricultural Research and Development Fellowships
African women working in agricultural research and development from Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, or Zambia who have completed a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree in selected disciplines are invited to apply. Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship
The Department of Energy Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) program provides outstanding benefits and opportunities to students pursuing doctoral degrees in fields of study that use high performance computing to solve complex science and engineering problems. Those studying engineering and the physical, computer, mathematical or life sciences are encouraged to apply provided they meet the eligibility requirements. Fellowship support is available for four years and must be renewed annually.

DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Program
The goal of the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is to prepare graduate students for science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission, by providing graduate thesis research opportunities at DOE laboratories.  The SCGSR program provides supplemental awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to pursue part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE laboratory in areas that address scientific challenges central to the Office of Science mission. The research opportunity is expected to advance the graduate students' overall doctoral thesis while providing access to the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the DOE laboratories.

The SMART Scholarship for Service Program has been established by the Department of Defense (DoD) to support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing technical degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The program aims to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers working at DoD laboratories.

Facebook Fellowship
The Facebook Fellowship Program and Emerging Scholar Awards are designed to encourage and support promising doctoral students who are engaged in innovative and relevant research in areas related to computer science and engineering. While open to students in any year of PhD study, a heavy emphasis on research and publication record for Facebook Fellowships favor students who are further along in their course of study.  First or second year PhD students who are members of a minority group that is underrepresented in the technology sector have the option of being evaluated for an emerging scholar award.

The Garden Club of America offers 28 merit-based scholarships and fellowships in 12 areas related to conservation, ecology, horticulture, and pollinator research. In 2018, more than $308,400 was awarded to 65 scholars.

GEM Consortium Fellowships
The mission of The National GEM Consortium is to enhance the value of the nation's human capital by increasing the participation of underrepresented groups (African Americans, American Indians, and Hispanic Americans) at the master's and doctoral levels in engineering and science.
GEM provides three Fellowship Programs. MS Engineering Fellowship Program: The objective of this program is to promote the benefits of a masters degree within industry. Ph.D. Engineering Fellowship: The objective of this program is to offer doctoral fellowships to underrepresented minority students who have either completed, are currently enrolled in a master's in engineering program, or received admittance into a PhD program directly from a bachelor's degree program. Ph.D. Science Fellowship: The goal of this program is to increase the number of minority students who pursue doctoral degrees in the natural science disciplines.

Hertz Fellowships
The Foundation supports graduate students working towards the Ph.D. degree in the applied physical, biological and engineering sciences. These fields include applied mathematics, statistics, and quantitative aspects of modern biology. Applicants must be willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the United States in time of national emergency.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program (NDSEG)
The National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship Program (NDSEG) of the US Department of Defense is intended for students at or near the beginning of graduate study for doctoral degrees in mathematical, physical, biological, and engineering sciences. It is a three-year award, which includes a stipend, plus full tuition and fees, not including room and board.

National Physical Science Consortium Graduate Fellowship
The National Physical Science Consortium is a partnership between government agencies and laboratories, industry, and higher education. NPSC's goal is to increase the number of American citizens with graduate degrees in the physical sciences and related engineering fields, emphasizing recruitment of a diverse applicant pool including women and minorities. The NPSC Graduate Fellowship is unique in being: open to all American citizens; lasting for up to six years; providing a $20,000 annual stipend; covering tuition; allowing a fellow also to hold a research or teaching assistantship; including one or two paid summer internships with a government agency; providing a mentor and the opportunity for a lasting relationship with the sponsor.

NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship (NESSF)
The purpose of the NESSF is to ensure continued training of a highly qualified workforce in disciplines needed to achieve NASA's scientific goals outlined above by performing research projects. Awards resulting from the competitive selection will be made in the form of training grants to the respective universities with the advisor serving as the principal investigator. All applications to NESSF must address the goals and objectives of one of the four SMD research programs: Earth Science, Heliophysics, Planetary Science, Astrophysics.

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships (NSF GRFP)
The National Science Foundation aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base in biological science, technology, engineering, mathematics, physical science, earth science, and social science in the United States and to reinforce its diversity by offering approximately 1,000 graduate fellowships in this competition. The Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based masters or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are at the early stages of their graduate study.

AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships
Providing opportunities for scientists and engineers to learn first-hand about policymaking while contributing their knowledge and analytical skills in the federal policy realm. AAAS seeks candidates from a broad array of backgrounds and a diversity of geographic, disciplinary, gender, and ethnic perspectives as well as disability status. Fellows have ranged in age from late 20s to early 70s. They represent a spectrum of career stages, from recent PhD graduates to faculty on sabbatical to retired scientists and engineers. Fellows also come from a range of sectors, including academia, industry, non-profit organizations, and government labs.

Schlumberger Foundation Fellowship for Women from Developing and Emerging Economies
Faculty for the Future fellowships are awarded to women from developing and emerging economies who are preparing for PhD or post-doctoral study in the physical sciences, engineering, or related disciplines to pursue advanced graduate study at top universities in their disciplines abroad. Related disciplines may also be awarded. For example, awards in biological sciences are limited to interdisciplinary research between physical and biological sciences.

Sloan Research Fellowships
The Sloan Research Fellowships seek to stimulate fundamental research by early-career scientists and scholars of outstanding promise.
