The Graduate and Professional Student Council (GPSC) works with other entities across campus to represent graduate and professional student needs, and to advocate for policies and practice which improve graduate and professional education. The GPSC seeks a friendly, service-oriented graduate or professional student to help support and ensure the smooth operation of the organization. The Chief of Staff will provide needed administrative assistance and interface with administrators and organizations on campus to coordinate meetings and the administrative work of GPSC.

Graduate Student Orientation

Student Union Memorial Center North Ballroom
During orientation, new students will learn about available UA resources, get tips on surviving graduate school, met new peers, and meet the UA mascots, Wilbur and Wilma! The vendor fair will wrap up the day. Students will receive a free 18oz coffee tumbler in addition to the information packet. (Limited supplies, first-come, first-serve).
Information sessions will be presented on a variety of topics to help you make the transition to graduate school will be held throughout the morning. These typically include the following (subject to change):

  *   Financial Aid and Funding Resources for Graduate Education
  *   External Funding Resources
  *   Mentoring Opportunities
  *   Coping with Stress
  *   UA Library Resources
  *   Campus Health Services and Student Health Insurance
  *   Time Management Tips
  *   Career Services for Graduate Students
  *   Tips for Teaching Assistants
Additionally, many UA clubs, organizations, and departments will also attend the afternoon orientation vendor fair so that you can become acquainted with other opportunities and services offered on campus.


Learning Assistants Quick Start Program for Fall 2018
Prior to each semester, we offer the Learning Assistants Quick Start Program<http://academicaffairs.arizona.edu/learning-assistants-quick-start-program>. The hybrid Quick Start Program is designed to give Learning Assistants (Graduate Teaching Assistants and undergraduate preceptors) an opportunity to learn from local and national experts about evidence-based teaching and learning strategies and to collaborate with their UA peers to prepare for their important responsibilities. We will offer a separate track for LAs who have completed the Quick Start Program previously.  The Fall 2018 program is scheduled for August 13-19, 2018. The online portion is expected to take LAs 5-6 hours to complete. The face-to-face event for LAs and faculty is scheduled for 5-6:30pm on Sunday, August 19th.  A light dinner will be served. If you would like your LAs to participate, please reply to this email with the following information:

*         Whether they are new or returning participants in the Quick Start Program

Sustained academic writing groups for University of Arizona graduate students
Facilitated WSIP PoC writing groups offer the following services:

 The Human Memory Lab- participants needed

The Human Memory Lab in the Department of Psychology at the University of Arizona is recruiting young adults ages 21 to 30 to participate in a study investigating memory process by describing life experiences. The study will take approximately 1 to 2 hours to complete. Monetary compensation will be provided.

Just In Time Workshops

Just-in-Time Workshops are offered in August during the two weeks before classes start. They focus on topics that are high priority at the start of the year and are designed to help UA instructors get the semester off to a great start.

Each Just-in-Time Workshop includes a blend of best teaching practices and practical "how-to" information. Participants are guided to use the information during the workshops and have ample opportunities to ask questions. The workshops are open to any UA instructors, including graduate teaching assistants. Note that one workshop is specifically for TAs.
